A young woman in Zhengzhou, Henan province has recently been hospitalized after taking a photo with a flower in her mouth. She was poisoned by getting up close and personal with an oleander flower, which produces a cream-colored liquid toxin.
The case of flower poisoning is not an individual case. "Oleanders are really poisonous! I felt nauseous and my throat tight after my friend and I took photos with them for more than an hour," a netizen wrote on social platform.
"Oleanders are toxic! Do not ever take photos like this!" Another netizen wrote.
Oleanders have a long blossom period, which usually lasts from May through October. With a variety of blossom colors, oleanders are favored by many people.
The leaf, rind, root and pollen of oleanders are all toxic, and will cause symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, cardiac discomfort and even lead to death.
But good news is, you’ll be safe if you don’t eat them, and keep your wounds away from them. The fragrance of oleanders will not affect people’s health, either.
Oleanders are a popular choice in parks and plantations, as they have strong ability in resisting wind and sand, smoke and fog, dust and toxin. They are also called “the environment guardian” or “the natural, green vacuum cleaner” for their outstanding performance in absorbing automobile exhaust and making the air clean.
Oleanders are beautiful though, they are still the ideal choice of ornamental plants, especially for households. Please note that when you see oleanders in parks, do not pick them and keep children away from them. Residential communities with oleanders should also warn people with a notice board.
