Text 1

W: Honey, which dress makes me look fatter?

M: You look slim no matter what you wear, but we are really going to be late for the concert, sweetheart.

Text 2

M: When can I start eating my supper, Mum?

W: As soon as your father comes home, honey.

M: But it’s already 7:30! I promised Peter we’d meet on the net at 8:30!

W: Patience! Daddy said he’d be back in 20 minutes.

Text 3

W: What sports course are you going to sign up for, John?

M: I was considering swimming, but Mr. Anderson says I am more fit for football. What about you, Jessie?

W: I have too many science courses this semester.I guess I won’t sign up for any sports.

Text 4

W: Do you know your father quit smoking?

M: No way! You’ve complained it for almost 40 years and he never listened. How come this time?

W: Last month he became short of breath playing with his grandson. Only at that moment he decided that his bad habit had to end.

Text 5

M: Fifty years ago, the fastest computers ever made took up the space of a football field.

W: Yeah, but nowadays the computing devices we now hold in our hands can do so much more in only a second. That really blows my mind.

Text 6

W: To be honest, I’m still shocked that Linda becomes my supervisor. She seems to lack any of the necessary skills to manage employees.

M: Yeah. Her reports are often inaccurate and she does nothing to improve productivity, but when you realize she is our boss’s niece, I guess you won’t be that surprised.

W: What? I didn’t even know that!

M: Nothing is fair in this world.

W: I think I’ll just find another boss who can really appreciate my ability instead of using some relatives.

Text 7

W: Who just called?

M: It’s our son’s coach, Mr. Smith. He wanted me to substitute for him at this weekend’s football practice.

W: Did you accept it?

M: No, I turned him down.

W: I remember you had watched him a few times work with the kids.

M: Yeah, but I’m afraid I’m just not qualified enough to train or teach them the skills they needed. That would be the blind leading the blind!

Text 8

W: Why do you look so mad, Dean?

M: Err, today when I got off work and returned to the parking lot, I discovered my brand new car had a big scratch! Someone must have hit my baby and not left a note!

W: Did the cameras in the parking lot record the whole story?

M: I checked with the security guards, but they told me that all the cameras had been shut down for maintenance.

W: That sucks! Anyway, you should call your insurance company.

M: I did. They said they will arrange for repairs. Aaargh! The more I think about it, the more angrier I get!

Text 9

W: So why does your job have a reputation for being stressful?

M: Stress is generally driven by the feeling of being out of control of a situation and the feeling of a situation controlling you. Trading in financial markets combines both.

W: How do you relax in the evening?

M: I rarely do anything work-related so it’s easy to escape “The Markets”. I generally go to the gym or go for a run, especially if I’ve had a bad day. I always cook a meal rather than have a takeaway, you know, to do something my brain would regard as creative.

W: Would you consider changing your job because of the high stress factor?

M: I have considered leaving my job due to stress-related factors. However, I do think that an element of stress can actually be a positive thing, if used in a right way.

W: What do you enjoy about the stressful aspects of your job?

M: I do actually enjoy an element of uncertainty.Trading generates a wide range of emotions second by second. It’s very challenging.

Text 10 (约200词)

W: Not all Halloween costumes are equally attractive to potential romantic partners, according to dating service PlentyOfFish. In fact, some are likely to scare them off: namely Donald Trump, the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in the 2016 election, and the Joker, from the DC comics.

In a survey of 500 US singles over age 21, PlentyOfFish asked men and women which pop culture costumes they were most likely to dress as, and then which costumes they would find the most attractive on members of the opposite sex. The results had some significant differences.

First, men are a lot more likely to dress as the Joker, but women are more likely to be most attracted to Batman. Second, women are not attracted to Donald Trump. He came in last.

But perhaps the biggest surprise comes with Pikachu, the Japanese cartoon character, who was chosen by just 2.1% of men, but chosen most attractive by 6.4% of women.

Moving onto women, it turns out that men are more attracted by Harley Quinn, Joker’s crazy girlfriend, than those traditional beauties.

Still, if you’re looking for love, you’re probably better off not dressing like The Donald.
