"Rise and shine!" cried Pongo. One by one, he nudged each of his fifteen Dalmatian puppies with his nose. Most of the puppies yawned and stretched. But Rolly just rolled over and slept on. "Aw, come on, Rolly," Pongo whispered in the pup's ear. "It's morning! Don't you want to go out?" At the mention of the word out, Rolly was instantly wide-awake! And he was not alone. As if by magic, the sleepy group had become a pack of jumping, barking Puppies. They raced together through the kitchen to the back door, where they jumped up and down, waiting for Nanny to let them out into thegarden. "Okay, here I come," said Nanny as she made her way across the  flun kitchen. Then she g the door open wide and stepped out of the way to let the puppies race past. But they didn't move. It was raining! "Oh, go on," said Perdita, trying to nudge the pups out the door. "It's only a little water." But they wouldn't budge! The next morning Patch °ke with a start. Then, springing into action, they tumbled over one another in their rush to get out the door. They raced off in different directions, ready to explore. But then, almost at once, all fifteen puppies froze in their tracks. They looked around at one another, then down at themselves. What was this stuff getting all over their spotted white coats? It was brown. It was wet. It was squishy. It was mud! And it was fun! From the doorway, Pongo and Perdit looked out at their muddy puppies and laughed. "You know what this means, don't you?"
