仔: Hello, everyone! Welcome back!
哥: Today, we start the LAST part of our class.
仔: Oh, no! It’s almost over!!!!
哥: Yep. This is our last week of classes. After this Friday, our class is complete.
仔: Well, it’s been very fun tohang out with you guys. So, what will we do for the last week of class?
哥:Well, we’ve talked about so many things already. We talked about HOW to have a conversation...
仔: WHERE to have a conversation...
哥: WHAT to talk ABOUT...
仔: And HOW to talk about it...
哥:So, right now, I’m thinking about how to HELP you guys practice this in the real world.
仔: That’s a great idea! When you want to really go out and make friends, the most important skill is a seed conversation, 种子交流方法. You have to be brave, talk to someone, and find their interests.
哥: So, for the last two classes, we will look at some more seed conversations and help you practice.
仔: At the same time, we will talk about some of the most popular topics for the end of 2017.
哥:Today, we will talk about one topic that is getting more and more attention in the news this year.
仔: We will share some useful words and phrases to help you talk about it.
哥:OK, let’s get started!
哥: OK, so what is our first conversation about?
仔: Lately, one topic that is getting more and more popular is cars.
哥: Cars? Really? That sounds like an old topic.
仔: Well, lately people are talking about ELECTRIC cars and SELF-DRIVING cars.
哥:电动汽车和自动驾驶汽车。That’s true! Electric cars and self-driving cars will be more and more popular in the future.
仔: Let’s listen to a conversation about modern cars. To help you practice seed conversations, will listen to each part of the conversation separately, and then talk about it.
哥: So, let’s talk about Break the Ice first. Where will this conversation happen?
仔: Imagine! You are standing on the street. There is a foreigner next to you. A car drives by – it’s aTesla, 特斯拉。You notice that the foreigner is looking at the car.
哥: Ah! So you know he might be interested in Tesla. That’s a great opportunity to use a comment, 评论类型的开场白。Let’s listen to how you could break the ice...
A: Hey, was that a Tesla?
B: Yeah, it was. It’s one of the new ones. I haven’t seen it on the street before.
A: Me, neither. It seems like electric cars are becoming more and more popular.
B: They really are. They’re the wave of thefuture.
哥: My opener was, “Was that a Tesla?”
仔: That’s a PERFECT comment 评论 opener, a great way to use the environment to find my interests. When I said “I haven’t seen it on the street before,” that lets you know that I’m REALLY interested in the topic, because I remember what cars I see on the street.
哥:Next, I shared my own idea: “Electric cars are becoming more popular.”
仔: Usually, you would ask more questions at the beginning of the conversation, to help you find my hot spot. But, you already found my hot spot, so you can just start sharing your own ideas about the topic. So easy!
哥:In your last sentence, you said, “They’re the wave of the future.” What does “wave of the future” mean?
仔: The “wave of the future” means that it will be more and more popular in the future. If I say, “electric cars are the wave of the future,” that means that, in the future, everyone will have electric cars.
哥: Got it! Let’s move on to Go Deep. I know you’re interested in cars, but I need to find out more information to make a real connection.
A: So, you know a lot about cars?
B: Not really. But I am very interested in electric cars. I think they can help the environment a lot.
A: Yeah. I don’t understand why everyone isn’t driving electric cars yet.
B: Well, there are a few reasons.
A: Such as?
B: Well, charging stations. There aren’t many charging stations yet, so it’s not very convenient.
A: That’s true. But charging stations are becoming more common, I think.
B: Yeah. And the price of electric cars is coming down, too.
哥: To find outmore about your interests, I asked the question: “You know a lot about cars?”
仔: This will let you know WHY I’m interested in cars, and help you ask better questions. For example, I told you that I’m not really interested in CARS, but I AM interested in the environment.
哥: But, what if I don’t know anything about the environment? No problem. Just ask simple questions, or share simple ideas, like I did. I said, “I don’t understand why everyone isn’t driving electric cars yet.”
仔: Right. That sentence gives me a chance to share more information.
哥: And I helped you to share more information by asking, “Such as? 比如说?”
仔: Then we talked about two things. The first is charging stations, 充电站。
哥: The second was the price. You said, “the price of electric cars is coming down.”
仔: Yep. “The price is coming down” means that they’re getting cheaper.
哥:So, in this conversation, we’ve already talked a little bit about your hot spot, but I haven’t made a strong connection yet. I need to find a way to make it more personal. I need to learn about your thoughts and your feelings.
A: If you could have any one car, which one would youhave?
B: Well, that’s a great question! I would love to have a small, cheap electric car. I don’t really care which brand.
A: Really? If you could have any car, why would you get a small one?
B: Small cars are more efficient. I believe that we all have a responsibility to the environment. So, we shouldn’t drive a big car when we could drive a little one.
A: Wow. Not many people think like that. Could I ask, what do you do?
B: I’m an engineer, so I spend a lot of time thinking about efficiency.
A: Ah, I get it. By the way, I’m Nathan.
B: Hi, Nathan. I’m Jordan.
哥: “If you could have any car, which one would you have?” This question lets me learn a lot about your ideas and your feelings.
仔: Yeah. Before you asked this question, we were only talking about cars. But AFTER you asked this question, we are talking about more personal things.
哥:You told me some interesting ideas about efficiency, 效率。Your ideas were not very common, so I guessed that you might have a special job that gives you some special ideas.
仔: See? After you learn about my ideas, you can learn about other parts of my life, too. It was easy to change the topic from cars to jobs.
哥: And after the conversation became more personal, it’s very natural for me to introduce myself.
仔: We have already done a lot in this conversation. You used 评论 to start the conversation.
哥: Then we talked about your hot spot for a while.
仔: Then you changed the topic to my job, and introduced yourself.
哥: Now, I could ask you more questions about your job, or we could talk about cars again. Really, we have lots of choices.
仔: But for now, let’s just go to wrap it up. After this conversation, how can you set the hook, 建立链接?
哥: I have an idea. Let’s listen.
A: Nice to meet you, Jordan. I have to go to work now, but I would love to learn more about cars sometime. I plan to buy a car in the next two or three years, and I want to make the right choice.
B: Yeah, that’s smart. Here’s my card – if you have any questions, just send me a text or an email.
A: I will! Have a good day, Jordan.
B: You, too!
哥: I used your hot spot to set the hook. I knew you were interested in electric cars, so I used that as a reason to keep in touch.
仔: You also told me that you want to buy a car soon. Is that true?
哥: Maybe, but it doesn’t matter! The important thing is, I set the hook, and we have a good reason to keep in touch later.
仔: Exactly! You know that I love talking about electric cars and the environment, so I think you have a good chance of talking with me again.
哥:That’s the power of a seed conversation!
哥: Today we practiced another great seed conversation.
仔: We also talked about electric cars, and how to talk about them.
哥: Of course, you might not have a chance to talk about electric cars with anyone you meet.
仔: So, remember to keep reading the news and learning about your interests.
哥: Make a friend-making lifestyle, and you will always have something to talk about!
仔: Next time, we will talk about some more hot topics for 2017.
哥: But for now, remember: don’t be shy, just say hi!
仔: 不用害羞,尽管去交流!
