Suddenly the little ghost and Scrooge are in a garden. Scrooge sees a new Ebenezer – he is thirty years old, with money. A beautiful woman stands near him.
'Ebenezer, you're different,' she says.
'How?' Ebenezer asks.
'There's money in your heart now, not me.'
'But I want to marry you, Belle,' Ebenezer says. 'I love you.'
'Listen,' Belle answers. 'I have no money. Your promise comes from poorer days. Everything is different now. Would you truly like to marry me?'
Ebenezer's face goes white. 'What do you think?' he asks.
'No,' Belle says. 'So forget your promise, Ebenezer. Goodbye. Be happy!' Then she leaves him.
'I can't watch any more,' Scrooge tells the little ghost.
The ghost says, 'You must see one last picture.'
They are now in a room – not expensive, but clean and nice. A girl is talking with her mother. Her five brothers and sisters are playing around them. Belle – as beautiful as always, but older – is the mother. She has a family.
Just then, Belle's husband comes home with Christmas gifts. The children open their gifts excitedly and play. Then they go upstairs to bed.
Belle's husband speaks to her. Scrooge and the little ghost listen to him.
'Belle, you remember Mr Scrooge …' the husband says.
'Well, his friend Marley is dying, I hear. But Scrooge is working in his office – alone.'
'Take me home, please!' Scrooge tells the little ghost. 'This is terrible.'
'You cannot change your past,' the ghost answers.
Suddenly Scrooge is back in his room. He sees all the faces from his past in the little ghost's face. He quickly puts the tall cap on the ghost's head and pushes down. Soon all of the ghost is in the cap. But Scrooge cannot stop the light. It comes from under the cap – white and alive.
Just then Scrooge feels tired. He leaves the cap near his bed and sleeps.
