Our band emerged onto long, narrow woodenplanks-already 30 feet or so above street level and started our march on the span, beginning with a walkalong a catwalk above thepassing traffic.

We eventually arrived at the spot over the waterwhere the bridge begins its upward arch.We climbed four steep ladders, about 25rungs in all, to reach the starting point for the stairway that would take us to the summit.

As we climbed the arch to the top,I tried torecall the instructions I'd read online: Don't look down, and breathe. I foundmyself holding my breath anyway and began thinking, “Is this supposed to be fun?”

But I kept climbing, hooked to the steel guy wire by a piece of plasticthat I doubted would supportmy weight if I ended up dangling over the water.
