The Wild Boar And The Fox

THE WILD BOAR AND THE FOX         野猪和狐狸的故事

A Wild Boar was engaged in sharpening his tusks upon the trunk of a tree in the forest when a Fox came by and, seeing what he was at,said to him, “Why are you doing that, pray? The huntsmen are not out today, and there are no other dangers at hand that I can see.”

“True, my friend,” replied the Boar, “but the instant my life is in danger I shall need to use my tusks. There’ll be no time to sharpen them then.”

当一头野猪在森林中的一棵树干上摩擦自己的长牙时，一只狐狸走过来。

Wild Boar:   野猪     engage:   从事，做 . . . 事                 Sharpen:   削尖，磨快

Tusk:   长牙（大象，海象，野猪的獠牙）             Trunk:   树干

Upon:   在 . . . 上面  -  He set the tray upon the table.  他将托盘放在桌子上。

Seeing what he was at, said to him, “Why are you doing that,pray?  The huntsmen are not out today,and there are no other dangers at hand that I can see.”

看到野猪没事做，在磨牙，狐狸说：“你在干什么呢？！祈祷吗？猎人今天没出来，据我观察，现在周围也没什么危险啊。”

Pray:   祈祷，祷告              Huntsmen:  猎人, 尤其是骑着马捕猎狐狸的猎人。

at hand:   在手边，在 附件              

“True, my friend,” replied the Boar, “but the instant my lifeis in danger I shall need to use my tusks. There’ll be no time to sharpen them then.”

“你说得对，朋友，现在周围是没有危险，”野猪回答说。“当我的生命遇到危险时，我要用我的长牙（保卫自己）。可是，那时我就没有时间磨牙了。”

Reply:   回答               the instant:   当 . . . 时候

Lost time cannot be recalled.    失去的时光永不复返。

That means, we shall make use of the time we have now, to do the most meaningful things for our future.  我们应该利用现在的大好时光，做对将来最有意义的事情！
