Plants are the basis of all life, including ourselves. We depend upon them for every mouthful of food that we eat and every lungful of air that we breathe. 

植物是一切生命的基础，包括我们自己。我们吃的每一口食物，呼吸的每一口空气都依赖于它们。

Every plant on Earth, from the Amazon to your window ledge, gets its energy from the sun. Plants use this energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose which helps them grow. But, it also gives off something else in the process, the gas you and I are breathing in now, oxygen.

地球上的每一种植物，从亚马逊到你的窗台，都从太阳获得能量。植物利用这种能量将二氧化碳和水转化为帮助它们生长的葡萄糖。在这个过程中，它也释放出其他物质，你和我现在吸入的气体，氧气。

This process is called photosynthesis and we rely on it to survive. So next time you see a plant, give it a nod or a wave and say "thanks for all the air, friend".

这个过程叫做光合作用，我们依靠它生存。所以，下次你看到植物时，向它点点头或挥挥手，轻轻地说一声：“谢谢你给了我空气，朋友”。
