吉维尼的田园风光

Monet loved nature, flowers, trees, mountains and rivers. He lived surrounded by beautiful scenery all his life.

In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny, a beautiful small village on the banks of the Seine. He rented a large house with a total area of 9,600 square meters, with a three-story main building, a huge garden, and a barn that could be converted into a studio. Monet and his two children, Alice and her 6 children, lived there together.

From then on, Giverny was Monet's base camp and until his death, he lived there for 43 years.

The various landscapes near Giverny always attracted Monet. Yellow irises, red poppies, the Seine River within walking distance, these Giverny sceneries often appear in Monet's paintings.

The Successful Artist

In contrast to the miserable conditions of the Vétheuil period a few years ago, Monet’s life in Giverny was completely turned over.

In his personal life, with the death of Hoschedé in 1890, Alice and Monet officially married, and with their marriage dispelled the whispers of gossip.

As for his economic situation, the past few years due to his extreme poverty had seen many of his works sold at a throwaway price, just like the 50 francs Vétheuil in the Fog sold for.

However now, Monet's nobleman, the paint dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, had returned to full blood the two years previously and re-started buying Monet's works. With these continuous purchases to support him, Monet no longer had to sell his works with tears.

Moreover, as his reputation grew, more and more art dealers came to his door. Among the four or five art dealers closest to Monet, one was called Theo Van Gogh. he was the younger brother of the post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh.

Monet had held his first solo exhibition in 1883. This was also the first solo exhibition among the impressionist group. Relying on the unremitting efforts of art dealers, Monet's exhibitions began to be held in Europe and the United States and he became an influential artist.

How can we tell whether an artist is successful or not? Nothing can explain it more than the price of their art. In 1872, the average price of Monet was 320 francs. In the years of extreme poverty around 1880, paintings were often sold for 100-200 francs. In 1894, the price of his works was between 6000-12000 francs.
