38.What did Chiang Kai Shek think of Hu Shi?
In June 1940, Chiang Kai Shek wrote a passage in his diary, saying that I appointed Hu Shi, a "man with no soul and common sense", as Chinese ambassador to the United States. It was "too much for me to blame anyone.". You think that it was the most difficult time of the Anti Japanese War, and it was the most important diplomatic mission of the Chiang Kai Shek government to strive for American assistance. How cautious should you be in sending an ambassador to the United States?
2. Why did Chiang Kai Shek belittle Hu Shi in private? If Hu Shi is not obedient, or not very good at handling affairs, it is enough to say that he has no common sense. Why should he add such a moral evaluation as "no soul"?
More than 20 years later, when Hu Shi died, Chiang Kai Shek also gave him a pair of elegiac couplets, saying that he was "a model of the old morality in the new culture and a model of the new ideas in the old ethics.".
You see, when we don't look up to another person's ability or position, we always depreciate his morality. In hindsight, the evaluation of morality is always erratic. People should not indulge themselves in talking about other people's morality, either openly or privately.
