Then Hamlet remembered the story of some murderer,who, seeing a murder on the stage, was so overcome with guilt that he confessed his crime on the spot. So Hamlet concluded that these actors should play something similar to the murder of his father before his uncle. He would watch closely what effect it might have upon him,and from his looks he would be able to tell with more certainty if he were the murderer or not. So Hamlet ordered the actors to prepare the play and invited the king and queen.
The story of the play was of a murder of a duke that took place in Vienna. The Duke's name wasGonzago, and his wife was called Baptista, The play would show how a man named Lucianus, a close relative of the Duke, poisoned him in his garden for his estate, and how the murderer in a short time after got the love of Gonzago's wife.
Hamlet sat near Claudius to observe his expressions. The play began with a conversation between Gonzago and his wife, in which the lady confessed her love. She promised that she would never marry a second husband if she should outlive Gonzago. She added that no woman was more evil than the one who kills her first husband..
