Four Levels of Reading

Goal a reader seeks

Four levels of reading (1st is in 2nd, 2nd is in 3rd, 4th is the all emcompassing)

1-Elementary reading
No literacy to beginning literacy
Receives basic reading training
Learned in elementary school

“What does the sentence say?”




2- inspecctional reading
Reading based on time
A student is allowed a set time to complete an assigned amount of reading

Aim: get the most out of the book in a certain alotted time

“What is this book about”
“What is the structure of the book”
“What kind of boo is it ? Novel? History?”




3- analytical reading

Thorough reading ,complete reading

The best and most complete reading that is possible given a limited time


Francis Bacon says
“Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested”

Analytical reading is chewing it and digesting it





4(highest level)-syntopical reading

Very heavy demands on the reader

The reader reads many books, not just one, and places them in relations to one another to a subject which about they are trying to resolve
