Chapter 20 | 井底之蛙

But it happened that after walking for a lone time through sand, and rocks, and snow, the little prince at last came upon a road. And all road lead to the abodes of men.

小王子长途跋涉，穿越沙漠、岩石和雪地，终于找到一条路。只要有路，就能找到人类居住的地方。

"Good morning," he said.

“早上好，” 小王子问候道。

He was standing before a garden, all abloom with roses.

他站在一个花园前面，花园开满了玫瑰花。

"Good morning," said the roses.

“早上好，”玫瑰花们招呼道。

The little prince gazed at them. They all looked like his flower.

小王子盯着这些玫瑰花。她们都和他的花长得很像。

"Who are you?" he demanded, thunderstruck.

“你们是谁？”他吃惊地问道。

"We are roses," the roses said.

“我们是玫瑰花。”玫瑰花们说。

And he was overcome with sadness. His flower had told him that she was the only one of her kind in all the universe. And here were five thousand of them, all alike, in one single garden!

小王子感到非常难过。他的那棵花曾说，她是全宇宙独一无二的。可是，在这个花园里，就有五千棵和她一样的花！

"She would be very much annoyed," he said to himself,"if she should see that ... She would cough most dreadfully, and she would pretend that she was dying, to avoid being laughed at. And I should be obliged to pretend that I was nursing her back to life - for if I did not do that, to humble myself also, she would really allow herself to die ... " 

“她很可能会不高兴，” 小王子自言自语，“如果她看见如此情景，为了解嘲，她会拼命地咳嗽的，假装要死了的样子。而我，不得不装作照顾她，好让她活过来。如果我不这么做，为了让我感到自责，她可能真会让她自己死去 ... "

Then he went on with his reflections: "I thought that I was rich, with a flower that was unique in all he world; and all I had was a common rose. A common rose, and three volcanoes that come up to my knees - and one of them perhaps extinct forever ... That doesn't make me a very great prince ... "

小王子继续反思：“我自以为很富有，有一颗全世界独一无二的花，却是一颗普通的玫瑰花。一颗普通的玫瑰花，和三座只到我膝盖的火山 - 其中一座可能还是永远熄灭的 ... 这些不会让我成为一个了不起的王子的 ... "

And he lay down in the grass and cried.

想到这里，小王子倒在扫地上，哭了起来。
