Today I will bring up a few things about the Yule Ball in Harry Potter that you may not have noticed. It’s been a while since I talked about the Harry Potter series. The Yule Ball happened during The Goblet of Fire, between the First Task and Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. In the second task, the Champions needed to rescue the person they would miss most from the lake in the Hogwarts Grounds. You may have wondered how the judges knew who the champions were going to miss most, because as far as we know there isn’t a spell that shows who a person misses, and using Legilimency to find out seems pretty crude and weird. It turns out that the Yule Ball was actually a chance for the Triwizard Judges to observe the behaviour of the champions and determine who they would miss most. Cedric Diggory went to the ball with Cho Chang, and the judges must have seen that they had a reasonably good time together, and they were happy together, and so Cho was singled out as the person Cedric would miss most. On the other hand, Harry went with Parvati Patil. Harry spent most of the Yule Ball talking to Ron, rather than sticking to Parvati, so Ron was chosen as the person Harry would miss most. Hermione and Krum also had a pretty good time together. Before the Ball took place Krum seemed like a grumpy person, but when he talked with Hermione, he seemed much happier. Fleur Delacour went with Roger Davies, but the judges probably figured that Fleur chose Roger Davies only because he was fairly good-looking and not because she really loved him, so Fleur’s sister was chosen instead. Another thing about the Yule ball is the color of Hermione and Harry’s robes. The books described Hermione’s robes as “periwinkle blue”, and Harry’s as “bottle green”. Blue and green are the colors of Ravenclaw and Slytherin, which, incidentally, were the houses that Harry and Hermione were considered for. The Sorting Hat considered putting Harry into Slytherin because of his disregard to rules, ambition, and his connection to Voldemort from the latter’s attack on him as a baby. The Hat thought about putting Hermione in Ravenclaw, because of her intelligence. J.K. Rowling might have meant this to happen, but this also could be a complete coincidence.
