Chapter11-1

In a dark alley, Miguel sat still on a wooden crate. Hector hovered over him with an open can of black shoe polish. He smudged a thumb bone across the boy’s face.

在一条黑漆漆的小巷子里，米格静静地坐在一个木制的大货箱上。埃克托手捧一罐黑色鞋油，在他身边转来转去，蘸满鞋油的大拇指在男孩的脸上不停地涂抹着。

“Hey, hey, hold still, hold still. Look up. Look up. UP! Ta-da!” Hector said after painting Miguel’s face to resemble a skeleton. “Dead as a doorknob.” Hector and Miguel exchanged satisfied grins.

“喂，喂，别动，别动。抬头。抬头。抬头！嗒嗒！”埃克托把米格的脸画成了一张骷髅脸。“这下真成了死人了。”埃克托和米格彼此交换了一个满意的笑脸。

“So listen, Miguel. This place runs on memories. When you’re well remembered, people put up your photo and you get to cross the bridge and visit the living on Día de los Muertos. Unless you’re me.”

 “听着，米格。在这个地方，回忆很重要。如果你被人记得，人们把你的照片摆上灵坛，那么亡灵节这天你就能走过那座桥，去看望活着的人。除非你像我一样。”

“You don’t get to cross over?” Miguel asked.

“你不能过桥？”米格问。

“No one’s ever put up my picture. But you can change that!” He unfolded an old picture and showed it to Miguel. In the photo was a young, living Hector. “This is you?”

“没人摆过我的照片。但你能帮我！”说着，他展开一张旧照片给米格看。照片上是一个活着的年轻时的埃克托。“这是你？”

“Muy guapo, eh?”

“很帅吧？”

“So you get me to my great-great-grandpa, then I put up your photo when I get home?”

“所以你带我去找曾曾爷爷，我回家后摆上你的照片？”

“Such a smart boy! Yes! Great idea, yes!” Hector said. “One hiccup—Ernesto de la Cruz is a tough guy to get to, and I need to cross that bridge soon. Like, TONIGHT. So, you got any other family here? You know, someone a bit more ... eh, accessible?”

“真聪明！没错！多好的点子！”埃克托说，“不过有个小问题，歌神德拉库斯比较难接近，而我需要快点过桥。今晚就要。所以，你还有别的家人在这儿吗？你懂的，一个比较……嗯，好接近的人？”

“Mmmmm, nope.”

“嗯……没了。”

“Don’t yank my chain, chamaco. You gotta have SOME other family.”

“别骗我，小孩儿。你肯定还有别的家人。”

“ONLY Ernesto. Listen, if you can’t help me, I’ll find him myself,” Miguel said, then whistled for his dog. “C’mon Dante.” He marched out of the alley, Dante loyally following behind.

“只有歌神。听着，要是你帮不了我，我就自己去找他。”米格说完便吹起口哨叫来他的狗。“走吧，丹丹。”他大步走出小巷，丹丹忠诚地跟在后头。

“Ugh, okay, okay, kid, fine—fine! I’ll get you to your great-great-grandpa!”

“啊，好了，好了，孩子。行——行！我带你去找曾曾爷爷！”

Hector led Miguel out of the alley and into a crowded street. “It’s not gonna be easy, you know? He’s a busy man,” said Hector.

埃克托带着米格走出巷子，来到一条人流如织的大街上。“没那么容易的，知道吗？他可是个大忙人。”埃克托说。

A large billboard advertising an Ernesto de la Cruz concert stopped Miguel in his tracks. Ernesto’s biggest hit song, “Remember Me,” blared from some speakers.

米格停下脚步，他看到一块巨大的广告牌上正在宣传歌神德拉库斯的演唱会。喇叭里传来歌神最火的那首歌《请记住我》。

“Ernesto de la Cruz’s Sunrise Spectacular!” Miguel exclaimed.

“歌神德拉库斯的‘光芒万丈’演唱会！”米格大叫。

“Blech! Every year, your great-great-grandpa puts on that dumb show to mark the end of Día de los Muertos.”

“呃！你曾曾爷爷每年都要开这场愚蠢的演唱会来宣告亡灵节结束。”

“And you can get us in!” “Ahhhhhh ... ”

“你能带我们进去看！”“啊……”

“Hey, you said you had front-row tickets!” Miguel said.

“喂，你说你有前排座位票的！”米格说。

“That ... that was a lie. Iapologize.” Miguel gave Hector a withering look.

“那……那是骗人的。我道歉。”米格狠狠地瞪了埃克托一眼。

“Cool off, chamaco. Come on, I’ll get you to him.”

“How?”

“’Cause I happen to know where he’s rehearsing.”
