故事原文:
“The Hawk and the Pigeons
Some pigeons had long lived in fear of a hawk, but being always on the alert and keeping near their dove-cote, they had figured out many ways to escape his attacks. The hawk was undaunted and decided to employ a new tactic.
“Doves, doves, doves,” he said to them one morning. “Why do you prefer this life of constant anxiety, always on the run, living in fear of me from dawn to dusk? If you would only make me your king, I could protect you from every attack that could be made upon you and you could live in peace once and for all.”
The pigeons, trusting his words, called him to the throne, but no sooner was he established there than he exercised his power by eating a pigeon a day. Said the pigeon who yet awaited his turn, “It serves us right. Anyone who voluntarily accepts the rule of an enemy must not be surprised if it is by his hand that they meet their own end.”
