The Velveteen Rabbit
In a little boy’s playroom you can see a soft and well worn out
Velveteen rabbit. The little boy played with it every day and each
night returned it to the toy box. Velveteen Rabbit was very happy that
that the little boy played with him every day until one day:
As it happened new toys entered the playroom. These toys displayed
lots of fanciful tricks which the Velveteen Rabbit lacked. At night the new
toys chatted about their skills while Velveteen Rabbit kept quiet.
However he found a friend In Cowboy Horse who like him was also soft
and fluffy but with the over use over the years saw him lose most of his hair and
was left with only one eye. He told Velveteen Rabbit, You know, soft toys like
you and I get loved the most and when we get loved over and over again,
we can become real” . “ What is real?” said Velveteen Rabbit.
Well, said Skin Horse, “Being real means you can move, and if you are
loved, you can show your love back.
One day, Nanny who looks after the little boy , came into the room and said,
“Oh dear, I must find a replacement for that walking doggie that is missing”
Nanny plopped Velveteen Rabbit into the little boy’s bed so started the happy
times for the boy and Velveteen Rabbit.The boy cuddled and kissed him
and took him out into the garden to play. His fur grew matted down but he was
happy with the little boy.
One day the boy grew ill and stayed in bed for days on end . Velveteen Rabbit
ended up in bed with the little boy. One day, the boy started to get better and
the doctor recommended he go to the seaside. “ What about this old bunny? “
asked Nanny.
“ Oh throw it away and burn it, it is filled with scarlet fever germs, Get him a new
bunny”
Velveteen Rabbit was thrown into a sack with the boy’s bedding and other junk.
The gardener was instructed to burn it but as he was busy, he left the sack untied
so Velveteen rabbit fell out. Soon it started to rain. Filled with sadness, he shed
a tear which landed on the grass. On that very spot where it had landed a
flower sprung up and out of the bud appeared a tiny Fairy. She revealed to
Velveteen Rabbit who was too shocked for words. “ I am the Fairy that takes
care of toys that are well loved”.
With one wave of her wand, Velveteen Rabbit discovered his legs could move.
The Fairy introduced Velveteen Rabbit to other rabbits and they became friends.
One day the little boy came out into the garden to play. The rabbits hopped
about nearby .
Velveteen Rabbit with his faded spots jumped onto the little boy’s feet.
The little boy thought,” he looks like my old bunny that was lost when I was ill.
I loved that bunny” Little did he know that was his own bunny and he
had returned to meet the boy as that was the reason the Velveteen Rabbit
became REAL.
