The hares were the most timid creatures in the meadow. They ran from the shadow of the hawk. They ran from the horses that galloped together in play. They ran from the farmer’s puppy that barked and raced after them.

“It is a terrible thing to be afraid of everything that lives,” one of the hares said.

“I cannot live with it anymore,” another hare called out. “I am going to drown myself.”

All of the hares decided this was a good idea. It was the only way to escape being the most frightened creatures in the world. So they raced through the meadow to the wide green pond.

In the pond, a large group of frogs lay on lily pads and logs and rocks, warming themselves in the sun. They heard the tremendous thumping of the hare’s big feet at they rushed toward them.

“What is that?” one of the frogs shouted.

“It must be monsters!” another frog cried.

And just as the hares reached the edge of the pond, all the frogs leaped into the water in terror. The hares stopped and looked at the rippling water. They waited, but the frogs did not come back to the surface.

Since the hares knew nothing of the way of the frogs, they were sure the frogs had drowned themselves in terror.

The hares turned and hopped back from the pond, now knowing they were not the most timid
creatures in the meadow.

“Now we know,” said the lead hare. “There is always someone worse off than yourself.”
