【英】《伊索寓言》第19集：The Frog and the Ox

Once a very small frog hopped into a great group of larger frogs. “I have seen the most horrible 
monster!” the frog said.

“Tut, tut,” the biggest of the frogs said. “There are no such things as monsters. Tell us exactly what you have seen.”

“In the meadow, I was nearly stomped by a huge creature with skin as white as a cloud. It had long horns and hooves that shook the ground like thunder!”

“Tut, tut,” said the biggest of the frogs. “That is only the farmer’s white ox. It is a slow, heavy thing and not all that big.”

The little frog hopped around in great excitement. “It’s huge, giant, like a mountain!”

The biggest frog merely shook his head. “The ox is bigger than us, of course. But not much bigger. Look, I can be as wide as an ox!” The frog swallowed great gulps of air and swelled bigger and bigger and bigger. “Is the ox as big as that?”

“Bigger,” the little frog said. “Much bigger.”

The frog gulped more air and swelled bigger and bigger. “Is the ox as big as that?”

“Bigger! Much bigger!”

The frog gulped more air and grew bigger and bigger. “Now, I know the ox is not as big as —” And with that, the frog exploded.

As the frogs hopped away, the little frog said, “Great pride can lead to great problems!”
