While we admired he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher — shirts withstripes andscrolls andplaids incoral and apple-green and lavender and faint orange, withmonograms of Indian blue. Suddenly, with a strained sound, Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily.

“They’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voicemuffled in the thick folds. “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such — such beautiful shirts before.” (P59, Para.8~9)

剖析  

1. Gatsby向Daisy展示他的衬衫，Daisy看到这么多高档衬衫后嚎啕大哭。Daisy哭是因为漂亮的衬衫，更是因为衬衫背后所代表的巨大财富，我们从中可以看出她的本质，非常物质。

2. 这段话中有很多描述颜色的词汇，如“coral”“apple-green”“lavender”“faint orange”和“Indian blue”，都非常形象具体。

Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count ofenchanted objects had diminished by one. (P60, Para.1~2)

剖析  

1. 这段话中的绿光代表的是Gatsby的一片苦心和执念，代表的是盖茨比的梦，他的梦就是能够与Daisy重逢。现在Daisy已经站在他身边了，说明他的梦已经实现了，所以绿光对于Gatsby的意义也就消失了。

2. 从Daisy没有做出任何反应可以看出她并没有理解Gatsby所说的话中的深意，但“我”显然是明白的。

3. 很多小说的结局都是主人公完成了自己的梦想，而这本书在故事进行到一半的时候Gatsby就已经完成了自己的梦想，所以读者就会比较好奇，想知道他的下一个目标是什么，以及他是否能完成这个目标。
