文本解析

“Meyer Wolfsheim? No, he’s a gambler.” Gatsby hesitated, then added coolly:“He’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919.”

“Fixed the World’s Series?” I repeated.

The ideastaggered me. I remembered, of course, that the World’s Series had been fixed in 1919, but if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely happened, the end of some inevitable chain. It never occurred to me that one man could start to play with the faith of fifty million people—with thesingle-mindedness of aburglar blowing a safe.

“How did he happen to do that?” I asked after a minute.

“He just saw the opportunity.”

“Why isn’t he in jail?”

“They can’t get him, old sport. He’s a smart man.” (P47, Para.11~17)

剖析  

1. “fix”指“暗箱操作、操控”。

2. “if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely happened”，这是if引导的虚拟语态，是对过去的虚拟，表示与过去事实相反的情况。

3. “It occurred /never occurred to sb”的意思是“某人想到/从没想到”。

4. 这里的“safe”是指“保险箱”。

5. 根据作者对Meyer Wolfsheim的描述，我们可以看出他是一个老奸巨猾、极为聪明的人，都没有人能够抓住他的把柄，而作者在之前的段落中提到过Gatsby与他有生意上的合作，这暗示了Gatsby的钱来得也不是那么的干净。

听到这里，我感到惊愕。我当然记得，1919年确实发生了这个事情。但是如果让我真正想这个事情的话，我会仅仅把它当作一件发生过的事情，是一连串事件必然的结果而已。我没有想到一个人竟然可以愚弄五千万人——就像盗贼那样，凭一己之力撬开了保险箱。

“他怎么会干那个的？”我不久之后问道。

“他只是把握住了机会而已。”

“他为什么没有坐牢？”

“他们抓不到他，old sport。他是一个精明的人。”
