Bulgaria’s second cityof Plovdiv is proud of its ˌre·pu·'ta·tion for doing things itsown way. As soon as you step off the bus from the capital of Sofia, you canfeel the change in pace of life. People walk more slowly. They seem to havemore time on their hands. The traffic is less 'hec·tic. As you walk to thecity centre through the park, where old men gather to play chess and people lounge and chat in the shade of the old trees, Plovdiv i·'mme·diate·ly feels different. There’s a kind of in·'sou·ciance to Plovdiv, something that is both immediately a·'ppa·rent and hard to put your finger on.
