there was this boy called billy
he was famous as billy forgot
no forgot was not his surname it was
rather his
habit name you'll see in a second
mom you promised to make apple pie today
yes yes i remember billy but
where's the cinnamon i asked you to buy
yesterday
i forgot billy did you post that letter
i
asked you to a letter which one
oh i remember now so
sorry sis i think i forgot
billy so that was billy forgot
he didn't forget everything of course he
forgot
only those things that he had promised
to do
for others he really was one of the most
unreliable
children you ever knew
the government says that all estates
like ours must now plant more vegetables
as many as we possibly can why daddy
all of us need to grow pure organic
vegetables
free of pollutants and pesticides we are
lucky that we have a garden in our house
billy organic vegetables are essential
for good health
all of us must grow vegetables in our
patches of the garden from now on
we will have to be very careful about
the gate then
so that the cow does not come and uproot
and eat the vegetables
well we shall begin planting the first
thing tomorrow
so the next morning right after
breakfast
mother daddy elizabeth and billy
went into the garden and started digging
and
planting a little while later the
postman appeared at the gate with a
telegram
billy ran to collect it father
it's for you hmm
i am called on commission near the coast

what's a commission daddy let's just say
i need to travel for work for how
long for a few weeks at least
i must leave within an hour so take care
of yourselves while i'm gone

now you must behave responsibly take

very well but it didn't quite last
soon billy went back to becoming billy

a few weeks rolled by until one evening
the family finally got the telegram they
were waiting for
lizzie billy daddy is coming home today

we shall go to get him at the station at
five o'clock
i shall make his favorite biscuit
pudding mashed potatoes and corn rolls
for dinner
yummy i love those oh it will be lovely
to have him back after so long
now go and make sure everything is clean
and proper in the house
and make sure your vegetable patches
look healthy
and pruned get along billy shut the cake
before you come in
the whole family started preparing
happily for daddy's arrival
and finally it was time to leave for the
station
when the family came out into the front
yard of the house
they saw the entire vegetable garden
ruined
what in the world happened in here
mother the foot marks a cow has been in
here
billy did you not close the gate
i forgot i am so sorry
oh billy goodness come on
daddy's train will be arriving soon
the family went to the station the train
came and stood and went but father was
not on it
mother are you sure the telegram set the
five o'clock train
yes but how come your father is not on
it
they waited on the station for some more
time
checked with the station master if there
was any other train
and finally resigned they went home
disappointed and very worried
though she tried to hide it it was clear
that mother was
really worried about their father by the
next morning
the worrying had given her a bad
headache
oh mother let me make some tea for you
that should make you feel a bit better

just then a car honked in the driveway
elizabeth billy ran out to see their
father emerging from the car
mother daddy's here
the family rushed out to meet daddy
oh i was so worried why didn't you come
yesterday
why i sent you another telegram saying
that i wouldn't be able to make it
till this morning what telegram
i didn't receive any elizabeth did you
get one
no not at all mother

billy billy
i i am so sorry mother
i i don't know how i just forgot
i am so so sorry
how irresponsible of you billy you had
all of us so
worried mother became unwell because of
your negligence
i am really disappointed in you and
is that your garden patch billy how did
it get destroyed
billy had no reply to his father he
simply hung his head
in shame luckily right at that moment
his friend john walked in
hello everyone hey billy how about
brunch with me tomorrow at 12.
we will take our lunch over the hill and
have a picnic
billy was overjoyed at the prospect and
quickly forgot about his vegetable
patch i would love that a picnic with a
friend was not something billy forgot
so the next morning billy got up early
got dressed
prepared a little picnic basket of his
own billy forgot
had not forgotten to buy some chocolates
and tarts the previous day
and at the proper time he set out for
his friend's house
full of anticipation he rang the bell
the friend's grandfather
opened the door ah billy what can i do
for you young man
a good day grandfather john had invited
me for a picnic brunch today
is he getting dressed yet well i don't
know
anything about brunch donna's out and he
is going to be out all day
but he invited me himself he didn't
mention about going out to me at all
oh i think john must have forgotten
sadly billy started walking back home
but the good thing was that daddy was
back so he would spend the day
playing with daddy he ran home
but to his surprise only jake the cook
was in

why they have all gone on a picnic to
the mountains
they won't return till tomorrow what
nobody breathed a word about it to me
i think maybe they have forgotten to
tell you
billy was miserable he couldn't bear to
go inside the house
so he sat in his patch of the garden
which was ruined
now because he had forgotten to shut the
gate
suddenly a yellow hammer bird came and
knocked on his head
and rather hard at that oh hey
cut it out
there is a big hole in there and i don't
think he wants it mended

hilly you need repair you know

you'll have a big hole in your head and
things just
fall away through it

things that you have to do the promises

and mom and dad and elizabeth too
why they just forgot
just as you do billy you should
understand
the things that you are so angry about
you have done those very things a
thousand times to people who
trusted you the getting sometimes is
natural but forgetting all the time
that is just plain wrong

i know i have been so mean
mean and selfish and unreliable
my family must hate me nobody's family
hates them billy
they love you and it's time you showed
them
but you love them too i will
i promise i will always remember things
which i have promised to people i will
never utter those words
i forgot and if i feel that i am
forgetting something
i will pinch myself now that's a plan
oh the very best
and billy did not waste any time he ran
inside the house cleaned up stacked
all the mail neatly laid the table for
dinner
and told jake what time do you think
mom and dad and lizzy will be back can
we make something nice for them
and i think i should make a big card
telling them
sorry for how irresponsible i have been
just then billy saw a beautiful sight
mom dad elizabeth and john
emerged from the inner rooms
billy daddy mother
john you're all here
you didn't go could we go leaving you
billy this was lizzy's idea and we are
so
glad to know that you have finally
realized how it feels when
others let you down mother was right
billy had finally realized and from that
day
that moment billy forgot changed himself
into billy cares billy became
so much billy cares that soon everybody
forgot that he had ever been
billy forgot at all and now a
responsible child
