                他戳穿社会的痛点

Trevor  Noah中文音译做崔娃，他是一位脱口秀演员和主持人stand-up  comedian and  host.  他的脱口秀节目The  Daily  Show经常对时事新闻做一些搞笑而又深刻的评论，因而他也是时事评论员a  political commentator.  

最近的一期节目中，he  addressed George  Floyd  death  他评论了George  Floyd死亡事件，注意这里address的用法，表示就某事发言。He  shared his  unique  perspectives他讲了他独特的视角。我们截取了其中的部分，略偏长，52秒，语速适中。讲解之后，我们来讲a  Trevor Noah  quote  about  his  mom. 

Script  

While  everyone is  facing  the  battle  against coronavirus,  black  people in  America  are  still  facing the  battle  against racism  and  coronavirus. 

What  is  society?  When  you  boil  it  down,  society  is  a  contract. When  you  see  a  man  losing  his  life  in  a  way  that  no  person  should ever  have  to  lose  their  life,  at  the  hands  of  someone who  is  supposed to  enforce  the  law,  what  part  of  the  contract is  that? 

When  you  are  a  have  and  when  you  are  a  have-not,  you  see  the  world  in  very  different ways.  And  a  lot  of  the  time  people  say  to  the  have-nots,  this  is  not  the  right  way  to  handle  things. Try  to  imagine how  it  must  feel  for  black  Americans when  they  watch  themselves  being  looted  every  single  day.  Because  that’s what’s  fundamentally  happening in  America. 

George  Floyd  died.  That  is  part  of  the  reason  the  story  became so  big,  ‘cause he  died.  But  how  many  George  Floyds are  there  that  don’t  die?  It  doesn’t make  the  news  because  it’s  not  grim  enough,  it  doesn’t  even  get  us  enough  anymore. 

Language Notes  

While  everyone is  facing  the  battle  against coronavirus,  black  people in  America  are  still  facing the  battle  against racism  and  coronavirus. 

在大家都在面对抗击新冠病毒之役的时候，美国的黑人仍在应对种族歧视和新冠病毒的战役。

Face做动词，表示面对，有时候还会用faced  with，来听一下这两个句子：My  country  faced  a  number of  challenges.    The  city  was  faced  with  serious  air  pollution  problems.  第一句说，我的国家面对着一些问题。用的是my  country faced；第二句说，这个城市面对着严重的空气污染问题。用的是the  city  was  faced  with.  所以，face就相当于be  faced  with，两者可以互换使用。

Black  people in  America美国的黑人，通常会说African  American. 

Racism  种族歧视，也可  以说racial  discrimination，有种族歧视的人，就叫做racist，如果说racist  views就是种族主义的观点，racist  practices 种族歧视的做法

What  is  society?  When  you  boil it  down,  society is  a  contract. When  you  see  a  man  losing  his  life  in  a  way  that  no  person  should ever  have  to  lose  their  life, 

什么是社会？归根到底，社会就是一个合同。你看到一个人失去生命，而是以一种没有任何人应该那样死亡的方式，

Boil  it  down这里的boil本意指煮沸，比如烧开了的水，也就是开水，叫做boiled  water. 烧菜的时候，汤汁一直煮沸，会变浓，所以boil  it  down就是指浓缩，引申指实质是…  还有另外一种表达方式，来听这句：It’s  really  sort  of  boils  down  to  three  pieces. 实际上，从根本上说，基本就是三个部分。你听到了吗，这里用的是boils  down  to，也就是something  boils  down  to. 

No  person should  ever  没有人应该做某事，意思就是根本/完全不应该做某事，是一种语气比较强的表达，比如来试着说一个类似的句子：任何孩子都不应该担心这样的问题。No  child  should  ever  worry  about  such  problems. 

at  the  hands  of  someone  who  is  supposed to  enforce  the  law,  what  part  of  the  contract is  that? 

死于本应执法的人手中，这是合同的哪个部分？

At  the  hands  of在某人的手中，指受制于某人，比如He  suffered  at  the  hands  of  a  corrupt  government. 在腐败的政府手中，他备受折磨。

Enforce执行，“执法”就是这里的enforce  the  law，也可以说执行计划enforce  the  plan.  执法人员，就是law  enforcement official 

When  you  are  a  have  and  when  you  are  a  have-not,  you  see  the  world  in  very  different ways. 

一个有钱有势的人，和一个一无所有的人，看世界的方式是非常不同的。

不知你注意到了么，这句中的a  have  和  a  have-not是把have做为名词，因此是指拥有一些东西的人，对应的a  have-not就是指什么都没有的人。在下面一句中，有a  have-not的复数形式，注意听，是什么呢

And  a  lot  of  the  time  people  say  to  the  have-nots,  this  is  not  the  right  way  to  handle  things. 

很多时候，人们跟一无所有的人说，不应该这样处理问题。

你听出来了吗，就是the  have-nots，相应的，有钱有势的人，复数就是the  haves. 相似的表达，还有the  rich  and  the  poor富人和穷人；dos  and  don’ts  要做的事情和不要做的事情。

Try  to  imagine  how  it  must  feel  for  black  Americans when  they  watch  themselves  being looted  every  single day. 

试着想象一下，当美国黑人每一天都看着自己被掠夺，他们会是什么样的感受。

在这次暴乱中，十分常见的一个词，就是loot抢劫。Trevor这一段说的就是，网上有很多人说黑人在暴乱中loot  stores抢劫商店是不对的，Trevor一针见血地指出，black  Americans are  being  looted every  single  day. 

Because  that’s what’s  fundamentally  happening in  America. 

因为那就是从根本上，美国在发生的事情。

Fundamentally  根本上地，形容词fundamental指基本的，比如基本原则fundamental  principles. 

George  Floyd  died.  That  is  part  of  the  reason  the  story  became so  big,  ‘cause he  died. 

George  Floyd死了。那就是为什么这件事搞得这么大，因为他死了。

这里的’cause  是口语中很常用的说法，就是because的简略形式。

But  how many  George  Floyds are  there  that  don’t  die?  It  doesn’t make  the  news because  it’s  not  grim  enough, it  doesn’t  even  get  us  enough  anymore.

但是，还有多少George  Floyd并没有死？那些都没有上新闻，因为没有那么严重，我们甚至根本都不知道。

How  many  George  Floyds在里在Floyd后面加了s，指的是像Floyd这样的黑人。

Make  the  news  成为新闻，如果说成为头条新闻，就是make  the  news  headlines. 

Grim严肃的、严重的，比如She  looked grim  and  upset她看起来表情沉重而沮丧。还经常会说grim  situation严峻的形势；grim  prospect暗淡的前景。

Quote  

My  mom  did  what  school didn’t.  she  taught me  how  to  think. 

我的妈妈做了学校没有做的。她教我如何思考。

这实际上说的，就是很重要，而很多家长are  busy  focusing  on  their  kids’  grades忙于关注孩子的成绩而忽略的：independent  thinking 独立思考。
