Chapter Five

Everyone is shocked, especially Ella. She didn’t plan to make Millie cry. The class is silent. Everyone feels bad. ‘Are you OK, Millie?’ Ella asks. ‘Sniff, sniff’,goes Millie. Now Ella feels really terrible. Millie’s eyes are a little bit red. Her nose is a little bit runny and pink. ‘Don’t call me mean,’ Millie says in a little voice. Nobody likes to be called names. ‘I’m sorry,’ says Ella. ‘I don’t have any friends at all,’ says Millie. ‘I thought you had lots of friends,’says Ella. ‘I did at my old school,’ says Millie. ‘But I don’t know anyone here!’

Zoe and Ella look at each other. They shimmy over on their beanbag.

‘Come and share with us,’ they say. Millie looks at the girls. She is sick of being the new girl. It is time for Millie to make new friends. Millie plonks down on the beanbag. It is a bit squishy, but somehow they all fit. Then Mr Williams continues reading the story.

Too soon, the story is finished. The princess rides the dragon into the sunset. The fairy lives happily every after with the princess and the dragon. ‘Time to go back to your desks!’ says Mr Williams.

This time, Ella and Millie put their pencil cases next to each other. The girls are going to write about what they did in the holidays. ‘You can use my favourite orange pencil,’ Millie says. ‘You can borrow my purple pencil,’ says Ella. ‘Here’s my best green one,’ says Zoe. The girls begin writing their holiday stories. ‘I went to the beach!’ says Zoe. She draws a sandy beach and some waves. ‘I collected some shells and paddled in the water. Will just laid on his towel the whole time, reading.’

‘Olivia andI went on the slip-and-slide!’ Ella says. Daddy made them a slip-and-slide in the backyard. Ella had a very sore tummy after that. So did Daddy. But it was lots of fun! ‘I didn’t do anything exciting,’ says Millie. ‘Why not?’ asks Ella.

Holidays should be at least a little bit exciting! ‘Did you go to the movies?’ Millies hakes her head.

‘Did you read a good book?’ asks Zoe. Millie shakes her head again. ‘We moved house,’ Millie says. ‘I used to live in the country. We even had a goat and some chickens.’

Millie draws a picture of a big house. It has three windows at the top and big trees around it.

‘Where do you live now?’ asks Ella.

‘I live in the city now,’ Millie says. Her new picture is of another house with just one tree. ‘My dad changed jobs so we had to move,’ she says. ‘All my things are inboxes.’

Ella and Zoe feel sorry for Millie now. It must be hard to live in a new place! Millie’s stuff is packed away. She has a new bed in a new bedroom. Starting at a new school must be hard.

‘Don’t worry,’ says Ella. ‘I will show you everything you need to know about our school.’

‘Maybe you can play netball with us,’ Zoe says. Millie has a big smile on her face. It is the first time she has smiled in ages. ‘I used to play netball at my old school,’ Millie says. Already she feels much better.

Ella, Zoe and their new friend, Millie, finish their holiday stories. Next, they are going to write some new ones TOGETHER!

The END.
