32、Please tell us something about Information cocoons.
Good morning, professors. Thank you for your question. Now I’d like to answer this question for you.
Information Cocoons was put forward by Sanstein. It's basic view is that people build Information Cocoons for themselves unconsciously based on their own interests when acquiring information.
There are many reasons for the emergence of Information Cocoons.
Firstly, from the audience’s point of view, people's selective mechanism is one of the reasons. It refers to people will carry out selective exposure, understanding and memory when contacting information.
Secondly, people come together through the Internet based on the same values and interests. The balkanization of the network make it difficult to communicate between different communities. Information Cocoons are gradually formed.
Thirdly, many new media use algorithm to spread information. It caters to people's interest and intensify Information Cocoons to some extent.
Information Cocoons has its detriment. For individuals, it will make people accept the same kind of information all the time, narrow their vision and make it difficult to talk with others who have different views.
For whole society, it will make it difficult to form society consensus. Once the opposition voice appears on the Internet, some extreme behaviors may appears.
Facing this situation, firstly, for public, we should to walk out the comfort zone actively and not only use algorithm but also use traditional media to achieve information. Secondly, algorithm recommendation should be combined with manual distribution. At the same time, algorithm should be upgraded.
This is my answer to this question. Thank you for your listening.
