BRYSON：(Smiling) A thousand dollars can be a lot or very little. One man could buy a happy home with it and laugh at(1) America's richest man.

BOBBY：That's true.

博比：这话不假。

BRYSON：A thousand dollars could buy milk for one hundred babies this summer, and save fifty of their lives. It could send a clever boy to college.

布赖森：一千美金可以在这个夏天给一百个婴儿买牛奶，拯救其中五十人的性命。这钱还可以把一个聪明的男孩送进大学。

BOBBY：Listen, Bryson. I asked you to tell me what I could do with a thousand dollars.

BRYSON：(Laughing) Go and buy a gold necklace(2) for your favourite dancer, Lotta Lauriere. Then go and work on a farm. Work with sheep. I've never liked sheep.

BOBBY：The beautiful Lotta! Yes, you're right. I want to spend all the money on one thing. You see, I've got to write and say what I spent it on, and I don't like writing. Thanks, Bryson!

SCENE 3 A necklace for Lotta

Lotta Lauriere is in the dressing room(3) at the theatre. She is getting ready. There is a knock at the door.

洛塔·洛里埃在剧院里的化妆间。她就要准备上场了。有人敲门。  

LOTTA：Who is it?

洛塔：是谁？

BOBBY：It's me. Bobby Gillian.

博比：是我，博比·吉利恩。

LOTTA：Come in, Bobby. (He comes in.) What is it, Bobby? I have to go and dance in two minutes.

洛塔：进来，博比。（他走进来。）怎么了，博比？我还有两分钟就要去跳舞了。

BOBBY：Listen, Lotta. Would you like a pretty necklace? I can spend a thousand. What do you say to that?

博比：听着，洛塔。你想要一条漂亮的项链吗？我手头有一千美金可以花，你觉得怎样？

LOTTA：(Laughing) Oh, you sweet man! It's true that I love pretty things. But...

洛塔：（笑）哦，你真好！我确实喜欢漂亮的东西。不过……

BOBBY：Yes?

博比：怎么？ 

LOTTA：(Putting on a hat) Did you see the necklace that Della Stacey was wearing the other night? It cost more than two thousand dollars at Tiffany's.

洛塔：（戴上帽子）你看到德拉·斯泰茜前几天晚上戴的项链了吗？那是在蒂芙尼买的，花了两千多美金呢。

BOBBY：Oh, did it?

博比：哦，是吗？

There is a knock on the door. A man comes in.

有人敲门。一名男子走进来。

MAN：Miss Lauriere, it's time!

男子：洛里埃小姐，时间到了！

LOTTA：Oh! I must go, Bobby!

洛塔：哦！我得走了，博比！

Lotta leaves. The man waits for Bobby to leave.

洛塔离开了。男子等博比离开。

BOBBY：What would you do with a thousand dollars?

博比：你会用一千美金干什么？

MAN：Open a bar. I know a place that could make a lot of money. Are you thinking of putting some money into(4) – ?

男子：开一家酒吧。我知道有个地方可以赚很多钱。你是不是正在考虑投些钱进——

BOBBY：Oh, no. I only wanted to know.

博比：哦，不。我只是想了解一下。

MAN：Listen, this could make us both a lot of money.

BOBBY：Excuse me. I must go.

Bobby leaves the room.

博比离开了房间。
