Quand on veut faire de l’esprit, il arrive que l’on mente un peu. Je n’ai pas été très honnête en vous parlant des allumeurs de réverbères. Je risque de donner une fausse idée de notreplanète à ceux qui ne la connaissentpas.

When one wishes to play the wit, he sometimeswanders a little from the truth. I have not been altogether honest in what Ihave told you about the lamplighters. And I realize that I run the risk ofgiving a false idea of our planet to those who do not know it.

当人们想要说些俏皮话的时候，说话就可能会不大实在。在给你们讲点灯人的时候，我就不那么实在，很可能给不了解我们这个星球的人造成一个错误的概念。

Les hommes occupent très peu de place sur la terre. Si les deuxmilliards d’habitants qui peuplent la terre se tenaientdebout et un peu serrés, comme pour un meeting, ilslogeraient aisément sur une place publique de vingt millesde long sur vingt milles de large. On pourrait entasser l’humanité sur le moindre petitîlot du Pacifique.

Men occupy a very small place upon the Earth.If the two billion inhabitants who people its surface were all to stand uprightand somewhat crowded together, as they do for some big public assembly, theycould easily be put into one public square twenty miles long and twenty mileswide. All humanity could be piled up on a small Pacific islet.

在地球上，人们所占的位置非常小。如果住在地球上的二十亿居民全都站着，并且象开大会一样靠得紧些，那么就可以从容地站在一个二十海里见方的广场上。也就是说可以把整个人类集中在太平洋中一个最小的岛屿上。

Les grandes personnes, bien sûr, ne vous croiront pas. Elles s’imaginenttenir beaucoup de place. Elles se voient importantes comme des 包baobabs. Vous leur conseillerez donc de faire le calcul. Elles adorentles chiffres : ça leur plaira. Mais ne perdez pas votre temps à ce pensum. C’est inutile. Vous avez confiance enmoi.

The grown-ups, to be sure, will not believe youwhen you tell them that. They imagine that they fill a great deal of space.They fancy themselves as important as the 北欧baobabs. You should advisethem, then, to make their own calculations. They adorefigures, and that will please them. But do not waste your time on this extratask. It is unnecessary. You have, I know, confidence in me.

当然，大人们是不会相信你们的。他们自以为要占多大的地方，他们把自己看得象猴面包树那样大得不得了。你们可以建议他们计算一下。这样会使他们很高兴，因为他们非常喜欢数字。可是你们无须浪费时间去做这种乏味的演算。真的没有必要。你们可以相信我。

Le petit prince, une fois sur terre, futdonc bien surpris de ne voir personne. Il avait déjà peur de s’être trompé deplanète, quand un anneau couleur de lune remua dans le sable.

– Bonne nuit, fit le petitprince à tout hasard.

– Bonne nuit, fit le serpent.

When the little prince arrived on the Earth,he was very much surprised not to see any people. He was beginning to be afraidhe had come to the wrong planet, when a coil of gold, the color of themoonlight, flashed across the sand.

"Good night," said the little princecourteously.

"Good night," said the snake.

 小王子到了地球上感觉到非常奇怪，他一个人也没有看到，他正担心自己跑错了星球。这时，在沙地上有一个月光色的圆环在蠕动。

 小王子毫无把握地随便说了声：“晚安。”

 “晚安。”蛇说道。

– Sur quelle planète suis-je tombé ? demanda le petit prince.

– Sur la Terre, en Afrique, répondit le serpent.

– Ah !… Il n’y a donc personne sur la Terre ?

– Ici c’estle désert. Il n’y a personne dans lesdéserts. La Terre est grande, dit le serpent.

"What planet is this on which I have comedown?" asked the little prince.

"This is the Earth; this is Africa,"the snake answered.

"Ah! Then there are no people on theEarth?"

"This is the desert. There are no peoplein the desert. The Earth is large," said the snake.

 “我落在什么行星上了？”小王子问道。

 “在地球上，在非洲。”蛇回答道。

 “啊！...怎么，难道说地球上没有人吗？”

 “这里是沙漠，沙漠中没有人。地球是很大的。”蛇说。

Le petit prince s’assit sur une pierre et leva les yeux vers le ciel :

– Je me demande, dit-il, siles étoiles sont éclairées afin que chacun puisse un jour retrouver la sienne. Regarde ma planète. Elle est juste au-dessus de nous… Mais commeelle est loin !

Thelittle prince sat down on a stone, and raised his eyes toward the sky.

"I wonder," he said, "whetherthe stars are set alight in heaven so that one day each one of us may find hisown again . . . Look at my planet. It is right there above us. But how far away it is!"

 小王子坐在一块石头上，抬眼望着天空，说道：

 “我琢磨着这些星星闪闪发亮是否为了让每个人将来有一天都能重新找到自己的星球。看，我那颗行星，它恰好在我们头顶上...可是，它离我们好远啊！”

– Elle est belle, dit leserpent. Que viens-tu faire ici ?

– J’aides difficultés avec une fleur, dit le petit prince.

– Ah ! fit le serpent.

Et ils se turent.

"It is beautiful," the snake said."What has brought you here?"

"I have been having some trouble with aflower," said the little prince.

"Ah!" said the snake.

And they were both silent.

 “它很美。”蛇说，“你到这里来干什么呢？”

 “我和一朵花闹了别扭。”小王子说。

 “啊！”蛇说道。

 于是他们都沉默下来。

– Où sont les hommes ? reprit enfin le petit prince. On est un peu seul dans le désert…

– On est seul aussi chez leshommes, dit le serpent.

Le petit prince le regarda longtemps :

– Tu es une drôle de bête, lui dit-il enfin, mince comme un doigt…

– Mais jesuis plus puissantque le doigt d’un roi, dit le serpent.

"Where are the men?" the littleprince at last took up the conversation again. "It is a little lonely inthe desert . . ."

"It is also lonely among men," thesnake said.

The little prince gazed at him for a long time.

"You are a funny animal," he said atlast. "You are no thicker than a finger . . ."

"But I am more powerful than the fingerof a king," said the snake.

 “人在什么地方？”小王子终于又开了腔。“在沙漠里，真有点孤独...”

 “到了有人的地方，也一样孤独。”蛇说。

 小王子长时间地看着蛇。

 “你是个奇怪的动物，还没有手指头粗...。”小王子终于说道。

 “但我可比一位国王的手指更有威力。”蛇说道。

Le petit prince eut un sourire :

– Tu n’espas bien puissant… tu n’as même pas de pattes… tu ne peux même pas voyager…

– Je puis t’emporter plus loin qu’un navire, dit le serpent.

The little prince smiled.

"You are not very powerful. You haven'teven any feet. You cannot even travel . . ."

"I can carry you farther than any shipcould take you," said the snake.

 小王子微笑着说：

 “你并不那么有威力......你连脚都没有......你甚至都不能旅行......”

 “我可以把你带到很远的地方去，比一只船能去的地方还要远。”蛇说道。

Il s’enroula autour de lacheville du petit prince, comme un bracelet d’or :

– Celui que je touche, je lerends à la terre dont il est sorti, dit-il encore. Mais tues pur et tu viens d’une étoile…

Le petit prince ne répondit rien.

He twined himself around the little prince'sankle, like a golden bracelet.

"Whomever I touch, I send back to theearth from whence he came," the snake spoke again. "But you are innocent and true, andyou come from a star . . ."

The little prince made no reply.

 蛇将身子盘在小王子的脚腕上，象一只金镯子。

 “被我碰触的人，我就把他送回他来的地方去。”蛇还说，“可是你是纯洁的，而且是从另一个星球上来的...”

 小王子什么也没有回答。

– Tu me fais pitié, toi si faible, sur cette Terre de granit. Je puis t’aider un jour si tu regrettes trop ta planète. Jepuis…

– Oh ! J’ai très bien compris, fit le petit prince, maispourquoi parles-tu toujours par énigmes ?

– Je les résous toutes, dit le serpent.

Et ils se turent.

"You move me to pity--you are so weak onthis Earth made of granite," the snake said. "I can help you, someday, if you grow too homesick for your own planet. I can--"

"Oh! I understand you very well,"said the little prince. "But why do you always speak in riddles?"

"I solve them all," said the snake.

And they were both silent.

 “在这个花岗石的地球上，你这么弱小，我很可怜你。如果你非常怀念你的星球，那时我可以帮助你。我可以...”

 “啊！我很明白你的意思了。”小王子说，“但是你为什么说话总是带着谜语？”

 “所有的谜语我都能解开。”蛇说。

 于是他们又都沉默起来。
