Movie Review: Gemini 双子杀手

Gemini 

A new film from Chinese director Ang Lee, starring Will Smith and Will Smith. Yes, I wrote his name twice. 

Will Smith plays Henry, a hired government assassin who kills bad guys with his exceptional sniper skills. Contemplating retirement, he learns that the government agency lied to him about his last kill. The government agency then tries to eliminate Henry using a younger version of himself.

Also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Kathy Bates and Benedict Wong.

This film has been heavily promoted for Lee’s use of 4K 3D at a frame rate of 120fps (frames per second). Most films are filmed using a 24fps. There are not many cinemas in the world that can show the film at 120fps. I saw the film in a cinema at 60fps. It looked like a film on my big screen TV before it was adjusted to cinematic mode.

The cloned younger Will Smith was made using computer animation (no de-aging).�It looks like the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” Will Smith, but there are some scenes where Smith’s face appears distorted and unnatural. Towards the end of the film some of the animation does not look very good.

All of this technology is irrelevant though as the most important aspect is the plot which is severely lacking in memorable action. There are some great moments but they are few and far between.

I’m a huge fan of Will Smith but this film does not service Smith’s obvious talent. Too many dry dialogue scenes and traveling back and forth without much purpose.

A disappointing action film and the new film technology cannot save it.
