Hello! Good evening! 晚上好！ I’m so happy to see you. I’m Shuhua, and it’s almost time to say good night.

你好！晚上好！很开心能见到你。我是树华。快到了要说晚安的时候。

But first, I want to talk with you about the Guqin.

可是现在，我想跟你聊聊古琴的事。

In university, I studied music history. But we only studied western music history. We didn’t learn very much about Chinese music history or Chinese classical music.

我大学学的是音乐历史。可是我们学的是西方音乐历史，没怎么学习中国音乐历史或者中国古典音乐。

So, I understand a lot about western music. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, it’s all very familiar to me. When I listen to it, I understand it. But I don’t understand Chinese music very well.

因此我非常明白西方音乐。巴赫、莫扎特、贝多芬你我都很熟悉，听的时候就能听懂。可是中国音乐，我不是很听懂。

You know, when you listen to a foreign language, you can hear the sound but you don’t understand the words. That is what guqin music sounds like to me. Beautiful, wonderful, soft, personal.

你知道吧，你在听外语的时候，你能听到说话的声音但是单词本身是听不懂的。对我来说听古琴也是那样的。漂亮、美妙、柔和、亲密。

I think western music is writing a story. It has grammar. You write sentences and paragraphs with the music. But guqin music doesn’t sound like writing to me. It sounds like thinking. When you are thinking, your thoughts go in and out, up and down. They change very quickly. They are always changing, like water. And those changes are beautiful. When I listen to it, I always get lost in my own thoughts.

我觉得西方音乐跟写故事一样，是有“语法”的，可以写成一句一段。可是我听古琴的时候觉得它不像写作，还是更像思想。你在做思想的时候，你的脑子会飘来飘去，想的事情可能可以变得很快而且一直在变，跟水一样。而且那种改变的过程很有美感。我听古琴的时候，总是会在自己的脑海里迷路走丢。
