Limiting the Growth of Technology
Throughout history man has changed his physical environment
to improve his way of life.
With the tools of technology
man has altered many physical features of the earth.
He has transformed woodland into farmland.
He has modified the face of the earth
by cutting through mountains to build roads and railways.
However, these changes in the physical environment
have not always had beneficial results.
Today, pollution of the air and water is a danger
to the health of the planet.
Each day thousands of tons of gases come out of vehicles.
It is now necessary for man to limit the growth of technology
in order to survive on earth.
The second and third readings.
You should begin writing now.

How to Use the Internet to Learn a Language
Good morning, everyone.
Today we will talk about how to use the Internet to learn a language.
Thanks to the advent of the Internet,
the world has become such that any two people
with access to computers and Internet access can communicate for free.
In this lecture, I am going to elaborate on some ways
that we can use the Internet to learn a foreign language.
Before you begin, reflect on your level of proficiency in the language
that you are learning.
Do you know some basic words and phrases,
but have trouble forming your own thoughts and opinions?
Are you at a point where you have amassed a number of vocabulary words,
but need to practice reading?
Determine first what you intend to focus on,
and make decisions based on the areas in which you find yourself lacking.
After that, you may get started in seeking help from the Internet
and here are the ways that might help you.
First, look for lessons online.
If you are just beginning to learn a language,
look for lessons online about things like verb conjugation, idioms,
basic phrases and vocabulary, etc.
There may be sites with quizzes you can take
so that you receive feedback about your progress.
Depending on the language,
the availability of sites such as these can vary.
Sites like this teaching German are probably more prevalent
than those teaching Indian, for example.
Nonetheless, search.
Second, read an online newspaper.
An online version of a newspaper written in the language
you are learning is one of the resources
with the most breadth and ability to benefit you.
While reading one of these, try to pick out vocabulary words
that you don't know, or grammatical structures that are new to you.
You may even be able to learn some slang,
and if you read the newspaper regularly,
you may find yourself becoming more culturally conscious.
Third, watch videos or shows in the language.
Sites analogous to YouTube have emerged quickly
in a variety of languages.
On these, like on YouTube, you should be able to find clips
of television shows and movies.
If you are trying to develop an ear for the language,
look up interviews with famous actors and actresses
that speak the language.
These will probably be easy enough
for intermediate to advanced learners to follow.
Finally, find a partner who speaks the language.
A variety of language interchange websites exist now,
serving to match people who want to learn a language with others
who want to learn their language.
You may speak English and want to learn Portuguese,
and someone in Brazil might want to learn English.
Partnering up will allow you both to improve your abilities
in the other's native language.
OK.I have outlined four ways for you to use Internet to learn a language.
I hope you will have fun and rewarding experience
when using the Internet to perfect whatever language of your choice.
Now, you have 2 minutes to complete your work.
This is the end of Section A Talk.
SECTION B  CONVERSATIONS
In this section you will hear two conversations.
At the end of each conversation,
five questions will be asked about what was said.
Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken once only.
After each question there will be a ten-second pause.
During the pause, you should read the four choices of A, B, C and D,
and mark the best answer to each question on Answer Sheet Two.
You have 30 seconds to preview the questions.
Now, listen to the conversations.
CONVERSATION ONE
M: We have to move the company to a new office.
W: I think that's a great idea, Tim.
M: Good.
W: We should be in the centre of town.
We'll be nearer to our customers.
M: Jane, I...
W: The transport is better...
M: Jane, I...
W: ... and there are lots of good restaurants.
M: Jane, I think we should move to the country.
W: Oh!
M: For... against. For: cheaper rent, cheaper houses, cleaner air.
It's quieter. There's not so much noise. And parking's easier.
Do you agree that these are all good reasons for moving?
W: Yes, I agree.
But let's talk about the things against moving.
Number one. A long way from some clients.
M: Yes, but that's not a problem.
W: What about communications?
M: There's an airport near the new location as well as a motorway.
And there are fast trains to everywhere from there.
W: So communications are better than they are from here?
M: I think so.
W: But what do we do with our spare time?
I know we can go for walks in the country.
Perhaps go horse-riding.
But we can only do that in summer.
What do we do in winter? When it's cold and wet.
It's not like here in the city, is it?
M: I agree. But in the town over there---
twenty minutes by car---
there are cinemas, theatres, good restaurants and there's a jazz club.
So, I think our company should move to the country.
Do you agree?
W: I am afraid I don't.
This is the end of Conversation One.
Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.
1. What are they mainly talking about in the conversation?
2. What does Tim think about the new office?
3. What is a good reason for moving according to Tim?
4. What do we learn from the conversation
about the transportation of the new office?
5. Why is Jane worried about winter in the new location?
CONVERSATION TWO
M: So, Miss Parkinson, you organize fitness training
and beauty treatments for working women?
W: That's right, Mr. Cruise.
M: Could you tell me how you first got the idea for the business?
W: Certainly. I suppose it all started about 5 years ago.
I was on holiday and had a very bad skiing accident.
I found that the only thing that helped the pain was massage
and gentle exercise, like yoga or stretching exercises.
So I used to go to therapists and classes after work.
M: Where did you work at that time?
W: In the training department of a media company.
M: I see.
W: But then I got a promotion to training manager.
That meant I worked longer hours
and was difficult to get to classes.
I asked some of my teachers
if they would come to my house instead,
and most of them agreed. It was more expensive
but I thought it was worth it.
Lots of my friends loved the idea too.
So I recommended people to them.
That's when I began to realize that
maybe I could make a business out of it.
M: Did you give up your job then?
W: No, not immediately. The idea was too scary.
I had a good job with a good salary,
and starting my own business seemed a bit risky.
So I just did it at a hobby really.
M: So why did you leave your job in the end?
W: Well, the decision was made for me really.
My company decided to relocate to a different town.
They offered me the choice of relocating with them
or quite a large sum of money if I preferred to leave.
I know an opportunity when I see it.
So I took the money!
M: Good for you.
This is the end of Conversation Two.
Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.
6. What do we know about Miss Parkinson's present job?
7. Why did Miss Parkinson ask her teachers to teach her at home?
8. What do we learn about Miss Parkinson from the conversation?
9. Why did Miss Parkinson finally leave her job?
10. What's the most probable relationship between the two speakers?
This is the end of Part II Listening Comprehension.
