1.*strain [streɪn]
n. 拉力，张力；拉伤；压力 
stresses and strains of a job  工作的紧张和压力
Their constant arguments were putting a strain on their marriage.
他们持续不断的争吵使他们的婚姻关系非常紧张。

2.*restrain [rɪ'streɪn]
vt. 阻止，制止；遏制
You should try to restrain your ambitions and be more realistic.
你应该尽量控制自己的野心，更现实一些。
Shame may restrain what law does not prohibit.
法律上没有禁止的事，羞耻心可以约束。
restraint  n. 克制，限制
During the recession, the government opted for a policy of wage restraint rather than a reduction in public investment. 
在经济衰退时期，政府选择的政策是限制工资增长，而不是削减公共投资。

3.curb [kɜːb]
vt./n. 控制；限制，约束；抑制
The government should act to curb tax evasion. 
政府应该采取行动抑制逃税。
You must try to put a curb on your bad temper/spending habits.

5.refrain [rɪ'freɪn]
vi. 忍住；节制
We refrained from talking until we knew that it was safe.

The government is planning to withhold benefit payments from single mothers who refuse to name the father of their child.
