Reading: Things You Can Do to Help the Environment

CARS
Cars are getting bigger. SUVs-large, truck-like vehicles(交通工具)-are now the most popular new cars in the United States. Bigger vehicles burn more gas and increase problems with acid rain(酸雨) and air pollution(空气污染). So try to walk, ride bicycles, or use public transportation(公共交通). And if you drive a car, keep it tuned up(调节,检修). This can save gas and reduce pollution.

PRODUCTS
Each American throws away an average(平均) of 10 kilograms ( 4.5 pounds ) of trash(?) every day. Most of the trash goes into landfills(填埋). Reduce(减少) waste by asking yourself: Do I need it? Is it something I can only use once? Buy products that you can use over and over again. If you use disposal products(一次性产品), choose those made from recycled(回收利用的) materials(材料).

ENERGY
The biggest use of home energy(能量) is for heating and cooling. So turn up your air-conditioner(空调) and turn down the heat, especially at night. Replace regular light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs(荧光灯), which use less energy. And remember to turn lights off.

WATER
Showers use a lot of water. In one week, a typical American family uses as much water as a person drinks in three years! Buy a special "low-flow" showerhead or take shorter showers. This can cut water use in half. Also, fix any leaky(漏的) faucets(水龙头).
