Singaporeset to raise retirement ages as seniors stay healthier
Singapore may raise its retirement andre-employment ages as citizens enjoy more years of good health and demonstratesustained productivity at work.
The retirement age, which is now at 62, andre-employment age, 67, are set to be raised, though the exact timing of thechanges and by how much have yet to be determined, the country’s Minister ofManpower Josephine Teo said in parliament on Tuesday. This comes after aworking group comprising individuals from the government, labor unions andprivate sector in the city-state reached a consensus on the matter, she said.
A higher retirement age will motivate bothworkers and employers to invest in skills upgrading and job redesign for olderworkers, while increasing the re-employment age will afford companies theflexibility to reset employment terms, like salary and job scope, to cope withbusiness uncertainties, Teo said.
“We should carefully consider the timingand pacing of these moves,” Teo said. “Countries looking to raise theirretirement ages typically make their intentions known five to ten years inadvance.” She cited Denmark, where its retirement age is set to go up from 65to 68 by 2030, over 11 years.
The Southeast Asian nation, grappling withan aging population, has been attempting to ensure it remains a vibrant economyby limiting restrictions on high-skilled foreign labor as well as re-balancingits education system in order to attract investment and encourage enterprise.
Fiftypeople across the United States have been formally charged with cheating to getstudents into highly respected colleges.
The FBI's criminal investigation was calledOperation Varsity Blues. It covers crimes allegedly committed between 2011 and2019 and it led to the arrest of athletic coaches, SAT and ACT administratorsand dozens of parents. What they're accused of doing is helping students cheaton college entrance exams like the SAT and paying some sports coaches to saycertain students should be admitted to their colleges because the students weregood athletes, even when they weren't. In some cases this involved creatingfake athletic profiles for students to make them look like good athletes.
Prosecutors say the cheating was carriedout mostly without the student's knowledge according to ABC News and that itwas done to get them in to schools like Yale, Georgetown, Stanford and theUniversity of Southern California among others. The interim president of USCcalled it immensely disappointing that school employees would allegedly abusetheir positions in this way. A U.S. attorney involved in the investigationsaid, for every student admitted through fraud an honest, talented student wasrejected. U.S. officials say this was the largest college cheating scam theFederal government has ever prosecuted.
