Ladies and gentlemen, we are now passing through the Channel Tunnel, the longest undersea tunnel in the world.

As we know, Britain and France are separated by the English Channel.

Before the tunnel, people had to take boats to go back and forth between the two countries.

One of the earliest proposals for an undersea tunnel dates back to 1858, when a French engineer, Aimé Thomé de Gamond arrived in England with a detailed plan for digging a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel.

【注意:proposal表示正式的提议和建议;

date back to...追溯到... ; a twenty-one-mile tunnel这里的twenty-one-mile中间用连字符号,构成复合形容词,mile用的是单数;

an eight-year-old boy  (The boy is eight years old)

a two-day meeting  (The meeting lasts for two days)

I have read a 500-page book.】

According to his plan, a platform could be built in the center of the Channel, serving as a port and a railway station.

To make the tunnel well-ventilated , tall chimneys would be built above sea level.【注意:sea level表示海拔高度,The mountain is 1000 metres above sea level. = The mountain has an altitude of 1000 m.】

Two years later, a better solution to the problem of ventilation was put forward by an Englishman, William Low, who suggested building a double railway tunnel

It was an ingenious idea because when a train entered the tunnel, fresh air behind it would be naturally drawn in.【ingenious /ɪn'dʒinɪəs/  An ingenious idea is smart and innovative.】

Despite this wonderful plan, the digging of the tunnel had not been started until 1881.【

However,the project was put to an end soon afterwards.

Why?Back then, the British worried that if war broke out the tunnel might provide an easy way for the French to invade.

The world wouldn’t have waited another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel, if Britain and France had got along at the time.【get along: When two people get along , they are friendly to each other.】

It was not until 1988 that both Britain and France agreed on a plan and began digging the tunnel from both sides of the Channel.

【It was not until .... that ...直到...才... It was not until the end of the day that I realized I had lost my wallet.  】

Six years later, the Channel Tunnel was officially opened, dramatically reducing the travel time between Britain and France.

I hope you enjoy the ride through this world-famous undersea tunnel.

Interesting facts about the Channel Tunnel

* A 200-year-old dream came true.

As early as 1802, a Frenchman named Albert Mathieu had the idea to dig very deep below the ocean and all the way across to the other side of the English Channel.

Originally, the tunnel was designed for horse drawn carriages to pass through.

It was recognised as one of the "Seven Wonders of the Modern World" by the American Society of Civil Engineers(美国土木工程师学会).

1) The Channel Tunnel is 31.4 miles long, with the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world . Its undersea portion is 23.5 miles long.

2) The average depth of the tunnel is 50 metres below the seabed, and the lowest point is 75 metres below.

3) There are actually three tunnels down there - two for trains and a smaller service tunnel that can be used in emergencies.

It takes around 35 minutes to travel the length of the Channel Tunnel.

1) high-speed Eurostar passenger trains

2) international goods trains

3) the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles

Up to 400 trains pass through the tunnel each day, carrying an average of 50,000 passengers, 6,000 cars, 180 coaches and 54,000 tonnes of freight. 【coach n.长途汽车a bus with comfortable seats used for long journeys】
