The forest fire you see in my first slide took place three years ago near my hometown.

It was the most destructive wildfire in the history of our country, which had lasted for nearly three weeks before firefighters could get it under control.

The second slide shows you what the forest had looked like a short time before the fire started.

It used to be a paradise, home to tens of thousands of wild animals.

But the devastating fire burned up most of the great trees which had covered the countryside for miles around.

The next slide reveals how the forest looked after the fire: smoke was still rising up from the warm ground over the desolate mountains.

To prevent the soil from being washed away , the forest authorities immediately ordered a few tons of special type of grass-seed which would grow quickly.

Fortunately, the planes had been planting seed for nearly a month before it began to rain.

Thanks to the timely and effective measures taken by the forest authorities, the surrounding

villages were safe from serious floods.

Wildfires may be inevitable but their negative impacts can be minimized by taking the necessary precautions.

Unattended campfires and discarded cigarettes are a few of the common man-made causes and they can destroy thousands of acres and endanger millions of lives.

Although often harmful and destructive to humans, naturally occurring wildfires play an integral role in nature. They return nutrients to the soil by burning dead or decaying matter. They also act as a disinfectant, removing disease-ridden plants and harmful insects from a forest ecosystem.

By burning through thick canopies and brushy undergrowth, wildfires allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, enabling a new generation of seedlings to grow.
