Joe Bradley, an American journalist, tall, handsome, and chivalric. Like all commonplace correspondents working in a foreign country, he knows loneliness, property, and hungers for a real story, which will bring him out of obscurity and back to America.
One night, he meets a beautiful girl in the street of Rome. She is neatly dressed, but seems to be drunk. Joe takes her home to his shabby attic. The next day, the morning paper establishes her identity: She is Princess Anne, a descendent of Europe's modest ruling family paying a visit to Rome. Joe is aware that this is a great opportunity. He accompanies Princess Anne around Rome, getting not only many a valuable photo of her but also a subtle impression reading of her character. Her grace, and her charisma, all she holds in her young frame are hard to overlook.
The happy experience of Rome set in an ordinary environment lasts for the whole day. Princess Anne prepares to leave. She must go back to the palace and carry out her duties. Those boring and routine political things opposing her character. Knowing the necessity of departure, Princess Anne is very sad, for her heart is also deeply touched by Joe.
Romance and reality always speak different languages. In the press conference held for Princess Anne, the princess has to pretend not knowing Joe.
