Chapter 1
Excitement pulsed (充满) through a packed (挤满人的) stadium (体育场) where thousands of revved-up (兴奋的) fans gathered to watch the Dinoco 400 (恐龙石油400圈汽车大赛)—the biggest race of the year. They honked (按) their horns (喇叭) and waved their flags in support of (支持) their favorite racers. The winner would receive the Piston Cup (“活塞杯”) trophy (奖杯) and be crowned (加冕) champion for the entire season (赛季)!
While more fans cheered outside, Lightning McQueen (闪电麦坤), the rookie (新手), was parked in the back of his posh (豪华的) trailer (拖车), trying to psych himself up (使…做好心理准备) for the race. It had been a huge year for McQueen. He had exploded (突然出现) onto the racing scene like a stick of dynamite (一根炸药,此处指一位引起轰动的车), and he already had an impressive list of wins and top finishes (往届冠军和前几名的名单). He knew that he had a good shot (很有机会) at winning the Dinoco 400, and if he did, he would be the first rookie in history to do it. McQueen felt his rpm (每分钟转数) increase at the thought (一想到这点).
“Focus.” He concentrated (集中) hard. “Speed. I am speed. I eat losers for breakfast. I am Lightning.” He had two things on his mind: winning and all the perks (额外福利) that came with it, including (包括) the Dinoco sponsorship (赞助). The sponsorship meant that Dinoco would pay McQueen a lot of money to compete in races.
“Hey, Lightning,” called Mack (马克,又称马克大叔). He was McQueen’s loyal (忠实的) trailer driver. “You ready?”
McQueen could feel the roar (欢呼声) of the crowds in the stands (看台) as his tires (轮胎) buzzed (发出嗡嗡声).
“Oh, yeah!” The sleek (线条流畅的) red race car revved (使快速旋转) his engine. “Lightning’s ready.”
Cameras flashed across (闪过) the stands like fireworks (烟火) as McQueen rolled off the rear (后部) of his trailer. He made sure he gave them a good look (让他们好好看一眼) at his lucky lightning bolt sticker (闪电贴纸) and the number 95 on his side.
“Ka-chow (咔嚓,Ka-类拟声词,闪电的口头禅)!” he called out as his grill (=grille,赛车前面的金属网罩) flashed across the stadium’s giant video screen.
McQueen made his way to the track (赛道). His competitors were waiting. There were more than forty other cars in the race, but Lightning McQueen knew that he had to worry about only two of them. Strip Weathers (史崔普·韦瑟斯)—also known as (被称为) The King (国王)—had won more Piston Cups than any other car in history. He also had been Dinoco’s golden boy (常胜将军) for years, getting all those big paychecks (薪水). This would be his last race before retiring. McQueen was sure that The King wanted to go out on top, and he still had the speed to do it.
And then there was Chick Hicks (奇克·希克斯,人称“路霸”). He was famous for (因…而出名) battling (战斗) through the line (全线)—bashing (猛撞) any car who stood in his way (挡道). He had never managed to beat The King, though. He was more determined than ever to win and begin a new era (时代)—the Chick era (路霸时代).
“Bob (鲍勃), my oil pressure’s through the roof right now (我的油压高到不行了,指心情异常激动)!” cried Darrell Cartrip (达雷尔·卡尔特里普), one of the race announcers (播音员). Poor Darrell was in danger of overheating (过热) as the green flag dropped. The three rivals (竞争对手) lurched into high gear (突然前倾加至高速档), launching (开始进行) the greatest race of the decade (十年) as they roared across the starting line (起跑线).
“Right you are, Darrell,” Bob Cutlass (鲍勃·凯特拉斯) agreed as he watched the action from the announcers’ booth (广播室). “The winner of this race will win the season title (赛季冠军) and the Piston Cup!”
“The legend (传奇,这里指国王), the runner-up (第二名,这里指路霸), and the rookie (这里指闪电),” Darrell said. “Three cars, one champion.”
