Chapter 2

The fish continued his swim deeper into the blue water. He moved smoothly through tall bunches (群) of green seaweed (海藻).

He passed colorful sea vegetation (植被) bobbing (摆动) and blooming (闪亮) in the crystal (清澈的) clear water. He swam by a school (群) of pink and orange striped (有条纹的) fish coasting (滑行) above the rocky ocean bottom. He weaved through (穿梭) a group of jellyfish (水母) with umbrella-like (伞状的) bodies and long, dangling (摆动不定的) tentacles (触手). Then he scurried (急赶) through a cavern (洞穴) dotted with (散布着) moss-covered (盖满苔藓的) rocks and vibrant (摆动的) plants and emerged (出现) in more open (开阔的) waters. He was heading somewhere special.

Giant (巨大的) shadows (影子) fell on the fish as he skimmed (掠过) the sea bottom. They were the shadows of giant blue whales. The family of whales glided (滑行) overhead, dwarfing (使显得矮小) the little fish.

Another family then joined the fish on his swim. A mother, father, and son swam with speed and grace (优雅) over the coral (珊瑚的) reef (礁石). They had human upper (上部的) bodies and long, scaly (长鳞片的) fish tails (尾巴) that propelled (推动) them through the water. They were mermaids! Like the fish, they were heading somewhere special.

Soon the reef was filled with merpeople (人鱼). Together they swam over the ledge (突出部分) of the reef and up toward a cavern. They entered the cavern and a bright light beckoned (吸引) them from the other side. As they got closer, the light got brighter and its source was revealed (展现).

A glittering (闪闪发光的) palace sparkled (闪烁) in the distance (在远处). Dozens of (许多) merpeople swam to the tall, majestic (宏伟的) towers. They entered the regal (富丽堂皇的) structure (建筑物) through a long passageway (通道) that led them to a massive underwater concert hall (音乐厅). Huge stone pillars (台柱) ran from floor to ceiling (天花板). Layers (层) of rock acted as seating. A glowing (发光的) anemone (海葵) hung (悬挂) from the ceiling, casting (投射) a spotlight (聚光灯) on center stage (舞台).

The fish and merpeople took their seats. They were eager to (渴望) see something spectacular (壮观的).

Ten red and pink long-snouted (长鼻子的) fish stood at attention in the arena (舞台). They used their noses to make loud trumpeting sounds (喇叭声). It was the call signifying (预示) the start of the concert.

An orange sea horse (海马) with a fancy (别致的) collar (衣领) appeared and cleared his throat (清嗓子). His job was to introduce the guest of honor (贵宾).

“His Royal Highness (尊贵的殿下), King Triton!” announced the sea horse with his head held high. Despite his tiny (极小的) voice and body, he immediately (立刻) gained (获得) the attention of the crowd.

The musical fanfare (号角的吹奏声) began, and the eyes of the audience (观众) were drawn to (被…吸引) a cavern high within the concert hall. Three beautiful dolphins pulled a chariot (双轮敞篷马车) made from an enormous (巨大的) shell. In it rode King Triton, the ruler (统治者) of the merpeople. He had broad, strong shoulders and a muscular (强健的) upper body. His mustache (小胡子) and long white beard (络腮胡) flowed elegantly through the water. A golden crown (皇冠) sat on top of the long white hair on his head. The massive biceps (二头肌) in his arms bulged (凸出) as he clutched (抓住) the reins (缰绳) of his chariot in one hand and a large magical trident (三叉戟) in the other. His golden glowing trident was the symbol (象征) of his royalty (王权) and unlimited (无限的) power.

The dolphins pulled the chariot through the concert hall, circling (环绕) the heads of the cheering audience. King Triton waved his trident. Beams (束) of light exploded from the ceiling and filtered (透过) down onto the crowd.

“And presenting the distinguished (著名的) court (宫廷) composer (作曲家), Horatio Felonious Ignatius Crustaceous Sebastian (霍雷肖·费隆尼俄斯·伊纳肖斯·克鲁斯特雷索斯·赛巴斯蒂安)! ” continued the sea horse with enthusiasm (热情).

Sebastian, a red crab, had written all the music for the concert and would conduct (指挥) the orchestra (管弦乐队). Two goldfish pulled his tiny snail-shell (蜗牛壳) chariot. Sebastian proudly waved to the crowd and blew them kisses (飞吻). He caught up to King Triton’s chariot and rode next to him.

“I’m really looking forward to this performance (表演), Sebastian,” said King Triton. “I know you won’t let me down (让我失望).”

“Oh-ho, Your Majesty (陛下),” began a flattered (高兴的) Sebastian. “This will be the finest concert I have ever conducted.”
