a. chance Cn. 机会

与动名词to do结合:

the chance to do sth. 去做某事的机会

We had the chance to meet Taylor Swift last year.

此时的chance在用法、含义都相当于opportunity

We had the opportunity to meet Taylor Swift last year.

She got the chance to study overseas for a year.

They were given the opportunity to visit the Kremlin.

b. chance Un. 运气;随机事件

chance: luck, random occurrence

—> by chance

I met her by chance at the airport.

(= without planning to)

—> sth. of chance

Chess is not a game of chance .

This is not a matter of chance.


—> It is/was pure chance that

It was pure chance that we wereboth there.

—>leave sth. to chance 听天由命

Why leave it to chance when a few simple steps will secure thedesired outcome?

chances=risks: unpleasant or dangerous possibilities.

d. chance Cn. 可能性;几率

The probability of something happening.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow.

She has a fifty-fifty chance of winning the game.

He has a slight chance of winning.

slight:微小、细小、(程度上)不严重

I had a slight headache.

She was slightly built.

There is a slim chance that he will come back tonight.

—Is there any chance that she would forgive me?

—Nope, there is no chance that she will ever forgive you.

—>Not a chance! =Absolutely not; no way.

—Do you think she'll go out with me?

Not a chance.

(=There is no way that she will go out with him.)

3. 课文中的chances ofdoing sth.可能性几率

1)suddenly放在句首

2)在复合型谓语动词中,suddenly放在第一个动词的后面

The silence was suddenly broken

...his neighbour, Aleko, had suddenly acquired a new lamb.

He had been fired.

—> He had suddenly been fired.

We have been asked to leave.

—> We have suddenly been asked to leave.

形容词形式sudden:

扩展:

1) all of a sudden

例句:

After I hadn’t heard from her in six months, she called me out of the blue tomeet for lunch.

2.通过动词,或者动词词组

“隐形”的“突然”

a.strike

The ship struck an iceberg.

It strikes me that they are in great danger.

It struck him that he would never see her again.

b. catch sight of

Some hours of walking blindly in the forest, they caught sight of a house in the distance.


扩展:catch a glimpse of 突然瞥到一眼

He caught a glimpse of a rabbit in his garden.

While driving home, he caught a glimpse of his wife standingoutside a flower shop.

c. plummet

It means to fall or drop suddenly in amount, or value.

例句:Stock prices plummeted 40percent during the company’s scandal.

Temperatures are expected to plummet this weekend.

The city’s population plummets when people leave for the SpringFestival holidays.

3.通过句式结构

“大象无形”的“突然”:when

when的特殊用法总结:

1)表示“过去某个时间背景”的主句。使用进行时态,或者表状态的延续性动词。

He had travelled only seven miles across the Channel when the engine failed.

I was sleeping whensomeone knocked on my door.

She was reading her favorite novel at home when it began to rain.

He was driving to work when hiscar broke down.

2)从句表示在该时间背景下,突然发生的某个事件

when the engine failed.

when someone knocked on my door.

when it began to rain.

when his car broke down.

3)这种用法下,从句只能置于主句之后。

比较:When his car broke down, he was driving to work.

He was still mumbling something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.
