Hello, everybody, this is Malcolm again. And now a little bit more about the story of the generations in jazz, the youth jazz festival, which is still going nearly 35 years later, since we’ve founded it. So I had many years, as I said 20 years in Mount Gambier so I was very, very much involved in this event, which is only held annually, once a year overall a long weekend holiday in South Australia, so it's a three day event. There are musicians and kids and parents arrive from Friday and event goes through to the Sunday, Sunday night.

But when daringly and myself started it in the mid 80s, we started with six secondary school bands from government high schools and a couple of private colleges and then we’re really only from Melbourne and Adelaide. So we started off with our six bands and then the rest was just entertaining the crowd with the small group staff, you know, trios and quartets that we formed locally, we were, you know, all working as musicians stand there. And then it just kept every year, just kept growing. l guess the old thing of word-of-mouth, you know the word got  up the Mount Gambier was a great place to visit for a holiday for three days and at the same time it getting involved with some music for the young people.

And the parents love it as well because you have the Kernel Warrawong wine region about half an hour by car out off the road, then we got the wineries on border as well because drinking wine and cheese and listening to jazz and all girls hand in hand beautifully. So I want to bore you with all the details over the years, but the event has now gone from basically six high school, secondary school.

The jazz bands and the term, the correct term is actually stage bands, which comes out of American. This type of band is very, very popular in America, in the USA, and basically consists of five saxophones(萨克斯管), four trumpets, fourtrombones(长号) and a rhythm section most commonly just piano, bass and drums but sometimes with a guitar as well. It’s surprising the interest in the USA and now in Australia was growing, Britain for that the matter as well.

In the young people getting involved in this music of course which is some of the four stage bands goes back to the great bands of the 1940s and the 1950s in the twentieth century. So we 谈论  about the Count Basic Orchestra of Duke Ellington,  who was the most prolific jazz composer of the twentieth century. Anyway, currently there are something like two hundred bands as I count from six to two hundred, and it just grew in the thirty years in size to the point where I was a chairperson for quite a few years when this growth really took off.

The town itself couldn’t accommodate all the people because we're now talking about, you know, five thousand people been in the town for three days you know swelling the town from 23000 population to 28000. So we had to also split the band in a band competition into four divisions, like a division A, B, C and D and I will pause that at a point and tell you more in the next talk.
