Today there are only about 1,600 pandas left in the wild. Many of the forests where pandas live have been cleared to make room for farms. Pandas have nowhere to go and no food to eat.

The Wolong Panda Reserve in China is just one way people are trying to help. The 150 pandas that live there cannot be harmed.

Pandas are also protected in zoos. The first pandas were brought to the United States from China in 1972. Today there are about 100 Red and Giant Pandas in zoos. （该书初版于2013年8月，目前世界范围内动物园饲养的熊猫数量有待考证。）

At first it was hard for Giant Panda moms to have cubs in zoos and on reserves. But in recent years, there has been a panda boom! In just one year, 16 cubs were born at the Wolong Panda Reserve.
