Meeting different people and making new friends at parities can be fun.

但是，情况也不总是如此。

But it is not always the case. 

我的朋友Eric上个月参加了一次晚宴。

My friend Eric attended a dinner-party last month.

女主人安排了一个好位子给他。

The hostess arranged a good seat for him.

他坐在一个身材高大，不苟言笑的女士旁边。这位女士叫Rumbold夫人，她身穿一件紧身黑色连衣裙。

He was sitting beside a large, unsmiling lady called Mrs. Rumbold, who was dressed in a tight black dress.【为啥这里用large ?】

Rumbold夫人总是板着脸，当Eric坐下时，她头都没有抬一下。

Mrs. Rumbold always kept a straight face and did not even look up when Eric took his seat.

Her eyes were fixed on her plate and after a short while, she was busy eating as if she hadn’t noticed that someone was sitting next to her.

To break the ice, Eric tried to make conversation.  

他问Rumbold夫人是否准备去看一部即将在环球影院上演的新剧。

He asked Mrs.Rumbold whether she would be seeing a new play which was coming to “The Globe Theatre.”

Rumbold夫人只是简短地回答“不”。

She just briefly（简短地）answered NO.

Eric想她可能对看戏不感兴趣，于是他换了一个话题，问她今年是否打算出国度假。

Eric thought she probably was not interested in going to the theatre, so he changed a topic and asked her if she would be spending her holidays abroad this year.             

不幸的是，Eric从这位女士嘴里得到的回答还是“不”。

Unfortunately, Eric received another NO from the lady.

当Eric问是否她会待在英格兰，他还是得到了相同的回答。

When Eric asked whether she would be staying in England, he got the same answer.

绝望之中，Eric又问她是否晚餐吃得还开心。

In despair, Eric then asked her whether or not she liked her dinner. 

终于，他听到了一个比”不”更长的回答，但是这个回答更令人讨厌。

Finally, he heard a longer answer than“No”, but it was even more annoying.

Rumbold夫人不耐烦地告诉Eric多吃东西少说话，这样他们都可以享受晚餐。

Mrs. Rumbold impatiently told Eric to eat more and talk less, so that they would both enjoy their dinner.  

显然，这个女士简直冷若冰霜。

Obviously, the lady is an iceberg.

在聚会上遇到像Rumbold夫人这样不合群的人的确是一件令人失望的事。

It is a real letdown to meet such a loner as Mrs. Rumbold at parties.

Let us learn some table manners.

Table manners have evolved over centuries to make the practice of eating with others pleasant.

Table manners are important for two reasons. One is to make others comfortable. The second reason is to keep us from embarrassing ourselves.

Let us learn some basic but important table manners.

1. Chew with your mouth closed.

2. Keep your smartphone off the table and set to silent or vibrate. Wait to check calls and messages until you are finished with the meal and away from the table.

3. Don’t pick your teeth at the table.  

4. Placing the Napkin in Your Lap. Don't tuck a napkin into your collar.

Use your napkin to blot(吸干) or pat（轻拍）, not wipe, your lips.                            

5.Wait until you’re done chewing to sip（小口喝）or swallow a drink.

(Choking is clearly an exception.)  When eating soup , tilt(倾斜) the spoon away from you.

6. Cut only one piece of food at a time. Don't wave your knife and fork when talking.

7. Avoid slouching and don’t place your elbows on the table while eating.  

8. Instead of reaching across the table for something, ask for it to be passed to you.

9. Take part in the dinner conversation. Do your best to mingle（交际）and make light conversation with everyone. Do not talk excessively loud. Give others equal opportunities for conversation.

10. Before leaving the event, always find your host or hostess and thank him or her, personally.
