Hi! This is Joe, on MT English. And today we’re going to be discussing expressing opinion. So very different ways to express an opinion, of course, you know, the lowest level students know “I think”, but you know, we have many different ways to say “I think”. For example “I consider”, “I consider that’s a bad move”, so a “consider” can be followed directly by a noun, and “I find”, “l find it very strange”, “I think it's very strange”, “I feel it’s quite strange”. So, “I think”and “I feel”, slightly different, “feel” is just the way you feel about something, maybe not necessarily that you know this thing, and “l believe” that is stronger, “I believe he is a good person.” very strong, I think.

所以呢,“I think”和“I feel”有细微的不同。

“I suppose”, “ I suppose we should go to the party”, “I think we should go to the party”, but “suppose”maybe some idea that we should do this because, I have some background to my logic here of why we should do it. “I presume (猜想) we should take train number two”, so “pre” means “before” in Latin, and “sumere” means to take, so it means you take this idea before you know it, so to presume something. “I presume you’re Tom”, cause maybe I have the name on a piece of paper so when a person walks in, I just presume it is Tom.

So there are all words we can substitute(代替) for “I think”, but have slightly different meanings. Another very basic way to say “I think” is “in my opinion”, most a low level students know this, but there are many ways to say it, so for example, “I' m of the opinion that”, for example, “I'm of the opinion that all people should get free health care”. “Personally, I feel...”, “personally l feel that education should be free”, and we can say, “I believe that” that’s usual a bit stronger and also a bit more personal, is your personal belief” , and if you want to make that even stronger then you can say, “I strongly believe”, “l strongly believe you should leave here now”.

“Personally, I feel...”

“To the best of my knowledge”, I think that native Americans were very civilized”. “In my experience, English is very difficult to learn”, so those are very personal ways of expressing your opinion, talking about the limitation of your knowledge, and how much you know. Another way to say this is “as far as I know”, “as far as I know, there are only three paths on this hike”.

另一种说法是 “as far as I know”,“据我所知,这远足的道路只有三条”。

If you want to say something with conviction(确信), that means that we are very certain, we’re very sure, we can say, “I'm sure that”. And we can also say, “I’m quite sure that”, so that's not so sure. if we very sure then we can say “I' m convinced that”, so that's a very strong way saying “I know” or “I think I know”. “I' m certain that...”, “I' m certain that he will not come”, so I’m very clear, I’m 100% sure. Maybe I'm not so sure, “I'm unclear about that”.

如果我并不是很肯定,那就用“I'm unclear about that”。

“I hold the view that”, “I hold the view that he was not a good president”. “To my mind, he is a wonderful person”, “To my mind, she is a great manager”. “As far as I'm concerned, we shouldn't get involved”, so that's a way to say “I think”, but it's regarding your personal opinion, so just another way to say “I think” essentially.

“I hold the view that”(我认为),“我认为他不是一个好总统”。

“Speaking personally”, “speaking personally, I wouldn't do that because I had a bad experience in the past about it”, so “speaking personally” usually brings in some kind of story from your life, something quite personal. We have a few phrases that might use “impression”, “my impression is that”, “my impression is that, she doesn't really want this job”, “I'm under the impression that he can't handle the pressure”, “It's my impression that we should think carefully about this company”, so these all are phrases that show that you from some evidence, you’ve gathered some opinion, and so essentially I think but from seeing something you gained an impression.

Here a couple common phrases that we use when you’re very sure. “it goes without saying that”, so that’s an assumption(假设) when you assumed(假定) that other people feel the same way as you, “it goes without saying that vegetables are healthy”, so we all know this thing, so it goes without saying.

“it goes without saying that...”(不用说...),这是一种假设,用于当你假设其他人和你想的一样的时候。

“I have no doubt that”, “I have no doubt that this restaurant is illegal”. So I’m very sure 100% sure. And maybe we’re not so sure but you have some feeling that something is happening, “I guess that”, “I guess that the government don’t want to invest in this area”. “I bet that”, that's a bit stronger, so you feel quite sure you’ll bet money on this, “l bet that he will not come”, so I’m really sure he won’t come. “I reckon that”, so that’s a bit of guess, I guess that or I reckon that, “I reckon, we could make some money doing this”, but I’m not 100% sure.

“I have no doubt that”(我毫无疑问),“毫无疑问这个餐馆是犯法的”。 I guess that or I reckon that,“我估计我们这样做可以挣些钱”,但是我并不百分百确定。

Often we want to clarify (阐明)an opinion, so that means just make it a bit clearer, so, we might say, “I think he doesn't fit into the team, by this, I mean in terms of his personality”, so “by this”, I mean, that's something that we can use to clarify an opinion. If we want to express an opinion but we think that people won’t understand, we need to make it clear, we can say, “to put it another way”, “To put it another way, I believe he can’t do this job”, so that sentence might come after something like he’s incompetent, “to put it another way, he just can't do this job”.

So hopefully from now on, you don’t need to use “I think”, “in my opinion”, very basic low level students use this kind of terms and you can express your opinion more fluently. Thanks for listening. My name is Joe, this is MT English.
