Lichun, also known as “Start of Spring”, is the first term of the 24 solar terms. In the old days, Start of Spring was an important day, when people had a big celebration. Today, the Hebei people have many special customs.

First, people must eat some spicy vegetables including onion, ginger and garlic, because they are good for people’s stomach. Second, some children should make rings out of branches, and put them on their heads. This is to welcome the spring. Third, some people should try not to argue with others, so that they will have a happy and successful year. Finally, people also make spring pancakes and eat them on this day. This pancake, which has vegetables and meat inside, depicts people’s wish for the new year.

Like the Spring Festival, Start of Spring is also a day for everyone to welcome spring and the start of a new year.
