An Attitude of Being Grateful
[00:10.87]Once President Roosevelt's house was broken into and
[00:16.39]lots of things were stolen.
[00:18.74]Hearing this, one of Roosevelt's friends wrote to him
[00:21.98] and advised him not to take it to his heart so much.
[00:26.16] President Roosevelt wrote back immediately, saying,
[00:29.60]“Dear friend, thank you for your letter to comfort me.
[00:33.28] I'm all right now. I think I should thank God.
[00:37.15]This is because of the following three reasons:
[00:40.19]firstly, the thief only stole things from me
[00:43.81]but did not hurt me at all;
[00:46.16] secondly, the thief has stolen some of my things
[00:50.21]instead of all my things;
[00:52.88]thirdly, most luckily for me,
[00:55.57]it was the man rather than me who became a thief...”
[00:59.76]It was quite unlucky for anyone to be stolen from.
[01:02.91]However, President Roosevelt had such three reasons to be so grateful.
[01:08.85]This story tells us how we can learn to be grateful in our life.
[01:13.36]Being grateful is an important philosophy of life and a great wisdom.
[01:19.30]It is impossible for anyone to be lucky and successful all the time
[01:23.77] so long as he lives in the world.
[01:26.35] We should learn how to face failure or misfortune bravely and generously
[01:31.79]and to try to deal with it.
[01:34.25] If so, should we complain about our life
[01:37.50]and become frustrated and disappointed ever since then
[01:40.95] or should we be grateful for our life,
[01:43.59]rise again ourselves after a fall?
[01:46.84]William Thackeray, a famous British writer, said,
[01:51.32] “Life is a mirror.
[01:53.13]When you smile in front of it,
[01:55.12] it will also smile and so will it when you cry to it.”
[01:59.17] If you are grateful to life,
[02:01.58]it will bring you shining sunlight.
[02:03.75]If you always complain about everything,
[02:06.97] you may own nothing in the end.
[02:10.03] When we are successful,
[02:11.60]we can surely have many reasons for being grateful,
[02:14.55] but we have only one excuse to show ungratefulness if we fail.
[02:19.47] We should even be grateful to life
[02:22.30]whenever we are unsuccessful or unlucky.
[02:25.23]Only by doing this
[02:27.16]can we find our weaknesses and shortcomings when we fail.
[02:30.36] We can also get relief and warmth when we are unlucky.
[02:34.44]This can help us find our courage
[02:37.21] to overcome the difficulties we may face,
[02:39.55]and receive great impetus to move on.
[02:42.50]We should treat our frustration and misfortune
[02:45.92]in our life in the other way just as President Roosevelt did.
[02:50.17]We should be grateful all the time,
[02:52.92] keep having a healthy attitude to our life forever,
[02:57.00]and keep having perfect characters and enterprising spirit.
[03:01.36]Being grateful is not only a kind of comfort,
[03:04.88]not an escape from life and
[03:07.26]nor thinking of winning in spirit like Ah Q.
[03:10.78] Being grateful is a way to sing for our life
[03:13.70] which comes just from our love and hope.
