Miss Bingley对Darcy的阿谀

Elizabeth took up some needlework, and wassufficiently amused in attending to what passed between Darcy and hiscompanion. The perpetual commendations of the lady either onhis handwriting, or on the evenness ofhis lines, or on the length of hisletter, with the perfect unconcern with which her praises were received, formed acurious dialogue, and was exactly in unison with her opinionof each.

Miss Bingley几次三番地奉承Darcy，但Darcy都是冷言冷语地应答。然后她又无事献殷勤给Darcy削笔，被Darcy拒绝。甚至为了阿谀Darcy，Miss Bingley还贬低自己的哥哥，说他写信粗心。

Bingley的过分谦虚在Darcy看来是一种变相的自夸，或者说是一种骄傲，原因在于Bingley其实对自己在写作方面的缺点是很自豪的，因为这些缺点是源于他的才思敏捷和随意挥洒，即使不值得称赞，但至少是很值得注意的。最后Darcy总结道：行事迅速的人认为行事迅速是很值得被看重的，但往往忽略了这样做出来的事情是不完美的。

"You appear to me, Mr. Darcy, to allow nothingfor the influence of friendship and affection. Aregard for the requester would often make one readily yield to a request，without waiting for arguments to reasonone into it. I am not particularly speaking of such a case as you have supposedabout Mr. Bingley. We may as well wait, perhaps, till the circumstance occurs,before we discuss the discretion of his behaviour thereupon.But in general and ordinary cases between friend and friend, where one of themis desired by the other to change a resolutionof no very great moment, should you think ill of thatperson for complying with the desire, withoutwaiting to be argued into it?"
