Talkabout a new language you would like to learn.
You should say:
Whatit is and how you plan to learn it
Whereit is spoken
Howit will help you
This summer I went toJapan so I’d like to learn Japanese. The reason for this is that I really love watchinganime movies and reading manga comics. I would love to be able to read them inJapanese and not have to bother with the Chinese translations. In fact, I’m seriouslyconsidering applying to a Japanese university to study the language there.
As yet, I do not haveany useful ideas about the academic system in Japan or of the university courseI’d like to apply for. So maybe my idea is just a pipe dream. But I have downloaded some language apps onto myphone and have started to learn some basic words. Actually, I was quitesurprised to find that I recognised a lot of the Japanese characters. They arecalled kana or kanji, I think, and are actually simplified Chinese charactersused as a phonetic script.
This was sort of mind-blowing for me because I had neverthought about it before. But of course, if I had paid attention to history Iwould know that the history of China and Japan have been intermingled for centuries. Once I had found that out I found thatI could increase my Japanese vocabulary a little bit, step by step. Of course, I am also learning English which is at theforefront of my studies. So I cannot allocate too much time to learningJapanese.
Nevertheless, I willstill continue to be fascinated by Japanese culture. Some of it is so weird. Ican’t understand where they are comingfrom, which is why I want to learn the language to try to get inside their heads. Walking around thestreets of Tokyo and Osaka was amazing and I felt right at home there, so maybe I have some affinity with the country. I came back from Japan with a suitcasefull of comics and videos so when I have some time on my hands I can settledown and try to make sense ofthem. Who knows, maybe one day, I will become good enough to go to universitythere. Of course, I’ll probably have to convince my mum that it’s a great ideaand that will be my hardest test.
