What chickens can teach us about hierarchies

What is the record number of eggs laid by one chicken in a year? Is it:

a:253

b:371

c:426

1

A hierarchy (等级制度) is a way of organising people. For example, in a company, where there are people working at different levels. You've got bosses, managers and workers.

2

a group of chickens is a flock ()

3 主要含义:品级很高的chicken通过镇压或者kill其他chicken以确保自身的产量。

The average flock (普通chicken群) just gets better and better and better. Egg production increases dramatically. The super-flock of super-chickens (顶级chicken), at the end of six generations, all but three are dead, because the other three have killed the rest. They've achieved their individual productivity (产量;生产率) by suppressing(镇压;压制) the productivity of the rest.

4

So chickens have an inbuilt (天生的;内在的) or, if you like,an inherited (遗传的) hierarchy - that's where we get the term pecking order (啄序,指鸡群中决定优势地位的程序,占优势地位的一只鸡可以去啄另一只地位较低的鸡;pecking order 还指任何团体中的长幼尊卑制度)from. But it's one that they create among themselves, rather than one that's imposed (把…强加于) upon them.
