I was once a poor student in English and it was my biggest headache and problem maker. I got sick and tired of learning boring grammatical rules and lifeless words. Under the guidance of my sister as well as my hard work, I found myself in a totally different and exciting world. Not only did I pass college English test band four and band six with high marks, but more importantly, I began to use English. My recipe is simple but efficient, interest plus practice.

I started from listening English songs and watching English movies, I’m a fan of pop songs. In the past, I only memorize the melody of English songs. But later on, I decided to learn the lyrics or the words by heart. Being able to sing English give me satisfaction and confidence. I came to see the pleasure of learning, which motivated me further. Then I watched English movies, usually I watched the movie several times, the first time for fun and the second time I try imitating one of the characters sentence by sentence. Gradually, I get a wonderful feeling of speaking English.

Topic: nowadays, entertainment has become very important in people’s life. What kinds of entertainment do you like best, indoor or outdoor activities, by yourself or with others? Well, speaking of the choice of leisure activities, I pick travelling in preference to anything else. Touring with a friend or two for fun, you may have a good time and become better acquainted with the nature. Sometimes, it could be economical to see the world by hitchhiking when you are visiting a country where accommodation is available.

My father is a policeman and my mother is a freelance. My elder sister is an English teacher in the middle school. They love me very much. You mentioned your sister is an English teacher just now, are you interested in English? And how did you learn English during the past years?

On the whole, physical recreation, which is more active, requires more stamina, while intellectual pastimes, which are more thought-provoking, require more mental exertion. Fellowship and toughness are characteristics of the former, whereas individuality and intelligence of the latter. I see what you mean. Young students of my age are intensely keen on playing games like basketball, football and volleyball at school. But as what I said just now, I like outdoors activities, especially traveling. So we can see people benefit from different kinds of entertainment.

But some people derive benefits by spending their leisure time in a more intellectual form. They take reading as the pleasure, because they think books are necessary nourishment for mind and spirit. Yes, this is especially true for some students. A wise student can use his or her long vacation for the enjoyment of reading a lot. Traditionally, listening to music is a popular hobby. Almost no nation denies it because life would be dull without music.
